Actually, downloading software is one of the biggest deterrents. The WebFE needs some work still, but being able to click and play is very important to people who never played a game like this. I've been getting bits and pieces fixed the last few months.

Actually, I can totally see that as true, but I think perhaps the website could be a little more clear on the benefits of the downloaded FEs. The Web Based gets people to like it enough to download it, but make sure people know that is an option.

Yeah, I'm talking with a new player now in the discord server, and the downloading of apps (specifically the SGE required before WFE/Stormfront) is very clunky, and not too straight forward on the website.
Plus... reboot required after installing stormfront? I mean, just comes across as a bit suspicious I'd say!

But, I'm trying to put their mind at ease to do it! Wouldn't be right if I didn't relay the information.

Nice to hear there are lots of new players running about! And the video was quite awesome.

I'll have to keep a look out when I log in later tonight for newbies.

And re: improvements to the FEs:
- I just wish StormFront was accessible to a screen reader for the blind. (I know this is on the to-do list somewhere.)

Been a while since I tried the Web FE, though I recall it as pretty clunky for someone with visual impairments and I know I was forced into it when making a brand new character on a brand new account, even though I wanted to log in with my accessible MUD client. Though I had the knowledge to know to log out from that immediatealy and re-login the proper way.

Been debating making a Podcast explaining how to log into the game as a visually impaired player. (I suppose would also have the entertainment factor for the sighted people of listening to the game being played without actually reading/seeing the game.)

That's a great idea! Until that gets rolled out in 2020, I guess people could include that in their quote line of their profile or somehow list it using the SERVICE verb? The SERVICE verb could even be updated just to include something like that.

I'll see if we can add something to PROFILE and maybe a new verb to scan a room. Won't be a quick turnaround.

Would it be easier to add to the service verb? New category of like "New Player Help". Or an always on amu-net type deal with a different verb like MENTOR instead of THINK, you could make it a little more OOC friendly and flag the channel on or off in FLAG:

New Player:
>mentor How does CM training work to increase your AS?
[MENTOR] XXXX: How does CM training work to increase your AS?

Anyone willing to answer:
>mentor Combat Maneuvers boosts physical attack strength (AS) by +1 for every 2 ranks of training. This bonus does not apply to attack spells which generate AS through the Spell Aiming skill.
[MENTOR] XXXX: Combat Maneuvers boosts physical attack strength (AS) by +1 for every 2 ranks of training. This bonus does not apply to attack spells which generate AS through the Spell Aiming skill.

This would allow new players to not have to go to the mentor's place and ring the bell when they have simple questions and don't want to get tied up for 5-10 minutes to wait for an answer. I like the lich format so I used that but you could make it however you want.

Love you forever if you manage to get that 'CHATTER' channel added to GS.

It was the one big thing I noticed that was really good for a new player in DR when I tried their F2P briefly - having an actual in-game OOC way of asking for help. As someone else noted, even basic free DekuMUDs usually have a newbie OOC channel that you have access to for a certain amount of levels.

DR's also got some symbol or pendant thing that new players have that has 3-4 properties to it that each disappear at different level/skill thresholds - auto-heal, encumberance reducer, auto-transport back to town (in case you get lost somewhere - I have seen this happen to new players who have no idea about gold rings and it'd be a good safety net for them) and auto-transport to their Profession guild (probably not needed as much in GS.) Would be nice if those cheesy mirrors that the sprites give you had some of this functionality. And it can't really be abused since the properties wear off once you hit a certain level.

Really, just need something that makes the world feel alive if you don't have Lich. You can feel pretty damn lonely in the game even when around a bunch of people.

So you should create the n00b guild. The n00b guild consists of a few guild skills that help n00bs unn00bify. Call it the Elanthian Institute or some garbage. The first guild skill being that advice channel that is a toggle on/off, with the default being on. Include a recall skill that works to send them back to the guild if they get lost. The guild has several quests, much like the adventurer's guild, but with the intent of teaching you things about the game. Have it graduate you at level 15 or so, the prenames kinda work cool for it too. You start out a novice, you move up to an apprentice, then to journeyman... Perhaps toss in graduate as a prename at 15.

Perhaps have the sprite quest end at enrollment into the guild.

As for the advice channel, Mentors are "instructors" in the guild and should have the ability to temporarily silence folks on the channel, because there be trolls and I don't feel GMs should have to be burdened with even more crap to watch over. Obviously if there is someone constantly needing to be silenced, the mentor would then report that person and a GM could take more permanent action.

I never expect any of this to get done.. I'm just posting random ideas so I don't forget them.

I agree that Simu probably should want to have a bit more quality control over the giving of advice and therefor it makes sense to put these abilities in the hands of Mentors. At the same time though, unless I don't completely understand how the Mentor system works, does someone have access to a Mentor at all times? I don't think so. And for those times, it would be good to have something where new players could ask questions of someone and have a way of identifying who would be a good person to ask. Maybe Simu could institute a type of Mentor apprentice whereby you wouldn't have to meet ALL of the current requirements of being a full Mentor, but Simu has at least made sure you have a certain level of knowledge and aren't a complete troll before being able to indicate that you are someone available to answer questions for new players. And certainly you would want to have the ability to toggle that ability off and on for the times when you know you're focused on a task and aren't really available to help. With somewhat looser requirements, you could have a good deal more people available for that kind of help.

I have to say... the mentors are fucking amazing. They somehow mix a good deal of both in character and out of character interaction incredibly seamlessly. Every one of them that I've met is incredibly knowledgable and very helpful towards the new players. Honestly, even though I'm mentory, they really do take it to a whole new level, and have a hell of a lot more patience than I do.

Mechanically, being a mentor gives you a few perks... If a newb rings the bell at Silverwood, you can teleport there to answer the questions and teleport back. They also have some scripts to restore lost pixies and produce newbie guides. It's not just a matter of a prename flag and go, there's actually quite a bit more to it. It's quite an undertaking!

Having been in the discord channel, and heard people respond to inquiries/questions there... a lot of people either overexplain or under explain mechanics on questions. Answering questions is an art and balancing act, and also realizing why people are asking the questions in the first place.

As a mentor, i honesty love that the community as a whole helps newbies out. We have a fair number of mentors and with a mix of east and west coast with one over in Europe we cover a good number of hours but we are volunteers and can't always be there. That said I know I was on the low end of spending at least 3 or 4 hours last night helping out newbies. We had at least 5 or 6 mentors spread out in all three starter towns so yes it was crazy but a lot of fun to see new faces. I will stress to definitely point them our way as we all have a passion to help BUT help them yourselves too as we are all the same community and we all would love to see 1000 character nights again. For that to happen we all need to welcome them in, get them going, and fostering them getting addicted. I just have to remind people that you need patience and remember some will come from other MUDs, others will be returning, and for some this will be their first time playing a MUD. What we consider something so simple will not come as easy to some of them.

Yeah, so I hope this is sarcasm and if it's not... I am fairly certain Simutronics only has one PM at a time... for all their game instances.

No this is serious guys, I'm freaking out. I swore, along with like 99% of the DR forum population, that Armifer was the "guy in charge". The typical tributary flattery followed every one of his comments and he's extremely active (single-handedly created the Necromancer class pretty much). I guess DR doesn't have a on-site PM?

OMG, is Wyrom PM of ALL Simu games? Have I not witnessed his apotheosis to the sublime? I'm NOT worthy!

Okay, well, my thought process is based on the fact that back in the day, Solomon was Simutronics PM and that meant for ALL the games, with APMs for individual games. After he left, there was a short period of time when there were CO-APMs, which was Wyrom and Liia for GS, who knows for DR (couple years ago). Then Wyrom took over as PM, which I'm fairly certain goes back to being in charge of all game instances.

Gotcha. I'm okay with being wrong. I was just going based on how it had been before.

Oh you're fine! The difference now is there are no APMs anymore. So all the work of the APM is back to the PM. And each game has a PM instead of an APM.

That was all from Solomon. There was a DR PM prior to him being over both. After the GS PM left, he became HMIC for all of the games and the just never hired a new one for GS until Solomon left.

Who the heck is Lyneya?

Like for serious, I haven't seen that name post anywhere on the officials. Anyway, interesting development, I'll try to tease out Lyneya to post more.

BTW, congrats Wyrom the GS pop. is almost neck and neck with DR, nice!

P.S. BTW, SUPER curious on retention of these new new players. I know your business strategy revolves around returnees but if there is even 20% retention on brand new players I think more advertising through various media might be justified. I think a regular pop. in the 700-800's isn't totally out of reality at this point.

You know what I realized. The development and just the sheer volume of activity by the GMs are leaps and bounds better in GS4 than in DR, like no joke. I'm sitting here about to buy some simucoin for DR but this whole Ytube this and 30 day promo that just drags me back again and again...I'm like FUCK!? What do I do?! And I'm in the corner crying... Fuck you guys, you make it incredibly hard for me to stay away. :)

How are the numbers now?

Numbers are solid! I know because I often check GS WHO numbers vs. DRs and for the past 6 months or so DR has consistently gotten roughly 100 more on the WHO numbers .. until the whole youtube thing. Now, it's closer to 25~50 depending on the night.

GS is kicking ass right now, like seriously. And oh btw, the minority that said advertising will work, you were right!

No one is talking to you, I'm pretty certain he was asking Wyrom.

Thanks, if I don't remember the names of them all, will they give them to me? I have had issues in the past (long time ago) where they would only activate a character I knew the full name of.

Are you reactivating your entire account? They've never asked me for all the characters' names when I do that, though it is fun to ask them to pronounce some of the weirder names because you've "forgotten" who is on there.

On the website when you reactivate it gives you a list of who you want to reactivate. If you don't check anything, phone caaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaall. You could probably email too, but on the phone you can ask them things about stuff.

There is a form that you can fill out to reactivate accounts and there is a section that says if you don't remember your security question, please indicate that you don't know it. So I did that for a second account, and I get an email asking for the last 4 digits of a credit card that was on file. I guess I should remember my credit card numbers from 4+ years ago.
