Is there a preferred shield size for hurling builds?

Shield size has no impact on hurling and hurling has no impact on shield use. Your shield and dodge training are primary factors in what shield size you might choose to use. Good luck.

Jeril tested all shield sizes with max Dodging maybe two years ago? The DS differences aren't significant from what I remember. Unless it's on a low-level character, you should be fine using any shield you like.

Thanks! I like the idea of a dwarf hiding behind a tower shield hurling a javelin at things.

Its all about the ratio of shield use ranks you have to dodging ranks. Dont forget to consider dodge ranks from spells, like mass blurs, mobility, etc.

If you have 2 shield ranks per dodging rank, for instance, use a tower shield. If you are 1:2, then use a buckler. If you are 1:1 then I guess the "use any shield you like" advice is more applicable. (although you could certainly look up the formulas and compare what gets you the most DS vs the attack you are vulnerable to).

PS - dont forget dodge sucks when you are encumbered, and shield use is fine when you are encumbered. If you expect to be hunting with encumbrance, I would consider this a tipping factor to a tower shield vs. other choices.

There are some other basic factors too that seem too obvious to get considered:

What sort of shield do you have available to you? A kick ass shield might be all the reason you need to go that route. Conversely:
Dodge doesn't require any equipment, shield use does.

What is the TP cost for your class for each skill?

Will you hunt vs ranged attacks? Shield use is superior vs ranged.

Also, ShieldMANs are a factor for consideration. Like if you want to get prop up, you can only use this with a large or tower shield.

Great advice, thanks for helping. I don't think the TPs are there to train 2x in shield AND 1x in dodge (at least not for a while). I've also got my hands on a decent tower shield.
