So I've never had any experience with a TiVo, but I'm sure someone here has. I just bought one for my mother for Christmas, so I have a question.

Is it required to get the subscription to the service? Or can you just set it like a VCR or something?

Subscription required.. if it's a TRUE TiVo.

There are others out there that don't require a subscription.. like my computer before I got DirectTV. Now it doesn't work, and that makes me sad.

:sniffle:

So sad I went out and got a TiVo last week. :)

Uhm... we have digital cable with the TiVo-ing option, though it's not actually called TiVo, but it does the same stuff. So I think you have, like, options, but better to subscribe to the service for the product you bought.

Also, where's my Christmas card!!! You have no idea the dirty looks I got in the card aisle today when I said we needed a gutting Christmas card.

TiVo is a DVR (digital video recorder) that does require a subscription. There are ones out there that don't, but they do not have the nice and friendly user interface that TiVo does.

Its like 12/month for TiVo subscription, or a onetime 240 lifetime subscription payment.

I have ReplayTV.

I bought it a few years ago, the model # is 5040. They don't make that model anymore due to lawsuits. They now make the 5540, which does not have commercial skip or recording-sharing (ability to send shows to other replay owners over the internet).

It's $10 a month for me - though I think the new subscriptions might be $12ish.

If your cable company supplies a DVR option - I'd check into it. My mom goes through her cable company and it's only $8 or so a month and it's built into her cable box.

If you do want the ReplayTV, I'd suggest going on Ebay and looking for a 5040 (5080, 5120, etc depending on how much storage you want). Automatic commercial skip is the bomb.

I ended up cancelling my TiVo order and ordering a ReplayTV on Amazon, even before reading this thread.

I'm not sure I want to give my mom something used, though. So no eBay.

Sucks that there's a subscription, but $8/mo. isn't that bad I guess.

I won't lie. I got it for her so she'd be my back-up if i missed a Smallville (heaven forbid).
