amount of shield use for THW/OHE warrior

Hi!

I recently retrained from THW/brawl to THW/OHE, and hunt with bastard swords and a katana.

I was wondering how much shield use I need, if any. I'm currently hunting without a shield, even if I hold my katana or bastard swords one handed.

it depends on the shield size you use more than anything else, small shield with dodge all you'd need more or less is to single, double for medium and triple for large/tower. Obviously the more training the better off you are even with the smaller shields, it as much depends on your dodge training as your weapon training. the more dodge you have the less shield you would need.

I'm currently 1x dodge. I have points to train 1x and 2x shield, but not 3x shield.

I like 3x shield because them shield skills are awesome. Dodge is great, but you don't get new attack/defenses/skills with dodge points

Very true.
I was expressing my enjoyment of all the shield skills/options. His play style would be rough to tank dodge. Or maybe he could just be a bad mother fucker and live hard die hard.

I trained up to 1x in shield use (I can always increase later), and bought an enchanted, spiked, flaring buckler (small shield).

Hmm, I know it might seem a bit silly looking to use a buckler with a bastard weapon. Does everyone concur? I guess I should go 2x shield and upgrade to a medium shield.

I found the SHIELD verb, and there's a huge list to choose from. Specifically, I have 68 ranks of shield use, which shield maneuvers should I try out? Thanks!

There are so many shield maneuvers, and I have only 68 points to spend! I've narrowed it down to:

shield bash
shield charge
shield pin
shield riposte
shield spike focus
shield spike mastery
deflection training
deflection mastery
deflect the elements
guard mastery
shield strike
shield strike mastery

Can anyone suggest a winning combination for me? I have but 68 points.

I tend to use the passive abilities, the ones the deflect bolt spells and ranged/thrown weapons are handy

Seeing as I don't have a veil iron buckler, what if I upped my shield use to 90 ranks, and trained in the following shield maneuvers:

small shield focus rank 3 (18 points)
deflection training rank 3 (36 points)
deflect the elements rank 3 (36 poinra)

90 points total.

I found a veil iron *medium* shield, because I'd like to get Spell Block rank 3 for deflecting bolts and balls.

This would replace Deflect the Elements, also at rank 3.

You said before I should 2x shield use for medium shields, but I can only manage 107 ranks of shield use. 2x would be 136 ranks, so I'm 29 ranks short of 2x.

Would you recommend going with the medium shield and less than 2x training in shield use, or should I continue my search for a similar smaller shield.

Also, I trained Block Mastery to rank 3 in the regular combat maneuver system.

I would imagine that the negatives of about a third off of doubling would by outweighed by the benefits.

Is a medium shield doable with only 1x shield use? I don't want to use more training points until I achieve my next level, and i'm having a hard time finding a veil iron/krodera/perm ensorcelled/etc. small shield.

One of thee math geeks would be a better person to answer that one, there are penalties for being undertrained, how severe thhey are someone with more number crunching skills then I possess, I used a tower for a long time without full training and it never reached up and stabbed me in the eye

Think I'm going to run with my 1x shield use and medium-sized veil iron shield. The goal will be to eventually bring shield use to at first 2x, then later to 3x.

Just in case I have to retrain my shield maneuvers, which potion do I drink at the Adventurer's Guild? Thanks!
