View Full Version : Combat Maneuvers as a pure pre-cap

I am sure this has been asked before but doing a search and reading through a lot of information here and on the officials I keep debating with myself on this issue:

Is it worth my time to invest training into Combat Maneuvers (like 1x past level 70) at the expensive of picking up additional wizard ranks pre-cap or just try to cap my spells first (MjE 100/MiE 75/Wiz 100) before even bothering with this?

Side note:

I actively avoid creatures that can disarm via CM. Most of the time I am getting hit with CMs is during bandits/Reim and I can solo both of those fine so far. My thought process leads me to believe picking up CM is a waste of my time until way post cap but I don't have experience beyond my current level (70). The other part of my mind says what are the extra wizard ranks really doing besides adding 1-2 DS at times (I don't really care much about enchanting hard things like fusion).

Any opinions are welcome. Thank you for reading!

It's not a "waste" of time, but the ROI for investing into spells would be higher than CM most likely. Unless you have a specific niche where the CM training is a major boon, then you're better off investing TPs into spells and buying some padded (temp or perm) armor to help mitigate the critical effects of various cmans.

Askip waited until he had 3x spells before getting CM. Disarm was annoying but not usually fatal because I carried a spare stave.

I always relied more on scrolls for defense than my gear, so using 4x vs 7x was no biggie.

Agree with Maerit. 1x Perception, 1x Physical Fitness, Haste/Celerity are all good enough to deal with like, 50% of RT stackers/disarm mechanics. Being quick on disablers, etc helps further increase your own protection. And I'd say that it'll take a lot of CMAN training to further mitigate the remaining 50%, likely more than you'd accumulate in 30 levels.

If you're looking for a more defensive build, consider Air & Earth lores before Fire for the RT Implications of 55 Air Lore Ranks and the proc-RNG for 25+ ranks of Earth Lore.
