I don't think that one has been figured out yet.

Voln fu formula for warriors and rogues:

Brawling skill + Brawling skill * 3/17 (normal rounding) + Perception skill/20(truncated) + Agility bonus/2 + Dexterity bonus/2 + Strength bonus/5

Voln fu formula for the other professions:

Brawling skill + Perception skill/20(truncated) + Agility bonus/2 + Dexterity bonus/2 + Strength bonus/5

This was pre-paladin so I'm not sure about them.

edit: look how little perception skill matters, it's skill not ranks.

So 8 trains of perception will get you two MB but it goes downhill from there. It's not really needed unless you want the perception for something else.

Basically if you want to hunt with Fu you should max brawling. Same as if you wanted to hunt with edged weapons, then you max out edgeed training.

My only question is the THT in the brawling formula, what is it and how is it calculated?

IRL I know Voln Fu.

I'm like Neo esse, fucking flipping like a ninja.

THT is basically like the d100 for voln-fu, you can't change it by training.

Hunt small creatures. No seriously. Voln-Fu damage is calculated based on creature size. Against creatures who assess as small you do 1.0 damage, way better than even a lance.

Against very tall creautres it's something like .25

Remember to assess them, you can't rely on what makes sense, for instance some giants are medium size even though their description says they are twice as tall as a giantman.

This is fairly typical of the messed up creature size system:

>asses kob
The kobold is medium in size.
The kobold is too easy for the likes of you!

>desc kob
This kobold is typical for a kobold. Smaller than a dwarf and even many halflings.....

>asses troll
The ice troll is medium in size.
The troll should be easy, yet could still give you a bit of a scuffle.
>desc troll
Huge, massive and dangerous, the ice troll towers above even a tall Giantman.......

Anyhow, remember small is better. Also don't bother with kai's song, save the mana for lullabye and put them to sleep before you attack.

I would say:
Hunt what you want. Size doesnt really matter unless you want to use "throw", which is a bit of a waste anyway.
I have come up against creatures that were too tall to throw, but stunned from kick nicely.
Train well in brawl, but doubling is not really necessary (until rift level I have heard - where it is apparently essential). 1X brawl works OK and Mobiles boost your MB nicely. Obviously, the more you train in brawl over and above 1x, the better things will be.
Forget assessing stuff. Kick it. If it hurts it, you can hunt it, if not, go somewhere else.
My Paladin was doing ok with 1x Brawl and is doing nicely now with 2x.
Snowy has near 1.5X and cruises with brawling.
As Stay said somewhere recently, Fu is way overpowered.
Sometimes the number-crunching just aint necessary.

yea I noticed it is just as easy to kill a ghoul master(15?) as it is to kill an ancient ghoul master(22?) but damn if I get hit from one of the older ones....

Should I single in shield and dodge or 1.5 each?

I've heard rangers don't really have the need to double in brawl because mobility adds to MB, is this true, or am I smokin' crack?

I would LOVE my paladin to be able to afford to double in brawl but really don't think it's gonna happen :( She has no brawl at the moment.

Pretty much true till 60 or so. Rangers were made to use voln-fu though, they have more advantages in it than any other class.

Although mobility isnt self cast so anyone can get it.
My paladin is kicking dead bottoms with 2x brawl.
Cant remember snowy being as scurry at 12, even though she is a ranger.
I have to say as well, that I would imagine there are a few professions that were made to use voln-fu. Not just rangers

Rangers are the only profession with mobiles, 102, 106 and AC guard all open to them. +15 MB and +60 (or more) DS makes them very good at it.

Not that it's bad for others, but it's very good for rangers.

Now that we can 2x Brawling, bards are capable of being particularly effective Fu'ers as well.

102 isn't that hard to hunt down, I just about always have it up if I'm Fu'ing via scroll. I confess I've never tried 106.

One of the big advantages for the Fu'ing bard is 1001 Holding song (I'd swear that this is like the defense-impairing equivalent of Mobility; instead of adding a direct bonus to my offensive MB, it takes a direct penalty from the target's defensive MB. My 1001 was regularly taking about 20 MB off of eidolons, dybbuks, and waerns when I hunted in Bonespear...that's the equivalent of 100 DS if it were following the 'normal' rules).

Also, a bard with brawling can play a two-handed instrument at the cost of only his shield DS, instead of parry DS or both. Again, my levels in Bonespear were mostly spent hunting with a harp in the left hand and nothing in my right, Disrupting everything I saw for a knockdown/stun and then Fu'ing them for the finish. Very effective hunting style.

Also, if you're training air lore, then 1035 becomes "Song of 1 second Fu". Not much lasts when it is being punched or kicked once every second :D
