This might be a bit racist but is Zelda and Link's race Elven? And does the game(s) ever explicitly state that?

Link and Zelda are Hylian, which are elf-like but are not actually elves. This race is established throughout the franchise/series.

I think Nintendo has basically agreed to the fact that they are out of the conventional console market. However, I think they still do fairly well in the mobile platform market. It appears that this is an attempt to streamline and consolidate the two differing streams into a single stream. Around the :54 mark or so.. they show the user adding what appears to be a DS cartridge into the device, which could imply backwards compatibility into their current DS titles (likely not 3DS)

Yeah people always assume that because they don't have Call of Duty or Madden or something they're not doing well. The Wii was the best selling console of its generation, not to mention the monster that is Wii Sports. They decided a while ago that they wouldn't directly compete with MS or Sony and instead focused on innovation (or gimmicks, if you want) and solid games/gameplay, and it's worked pretty well for them. Wii U was a bit of a bad spot, but we'll see how the next one turns out.

You obviously didn't understand what you were seeing. The "brains" of the console are in the little screen that you can pull out, not the base unit. There are no range limitations. Thus the guy taking it on a airplane with him...

Declaring it the 'Jesus Christ' of consoles after a short trailer is a bit fanboyish. There are a lot of ways this could fail. We don't know its full specs, we don't know its battery life, and we don't know what kind of support it's getting. Purchases tied to the console bugged the hell out of me with the Wii U.

But instead of continuing to troll the thread, here's some more information:
"The dock is not the main console unit of Nintendo Switch": Nintendo confirmed to IGN that "the main unit of Nintendo Switch is the unit that has the LCD screen." The dock's main functions are TV output and power/charging, Nintendo said, which suggests the dock won't actually have much in the way of additional hardware to enable higher-fidelity play on an HDTV.
The Switch can't play physical 3DS or Wii U games: This Destructoid translation of a Japanese Famitsu story confirms that the Switch will not play physical games from Nintendo's most recent consoles. We're not holding our breath that downloadable 3DS or Wii U titles will be supported, either, due to the internal architecture changes to the system's processor. Older, downloadable Virtual Console titles aren't out of the question, though.
Switch comes with two Joy-Con controllers (left and right) to snap onto that LCD screen, according to that Famitsu translation. Nintendo wouldn't comment on whether the TV dock or Joy-Con "grip" handles come in the standard package, which strongly suggests that there could be lower-priced bundles that don't include these "optional" accessories.
Skyrim and NBA 2K are not actually confirmed for the system: Despite being the only third-party titles to feature heavily in the Switch trailer, Bethesda and 2K Games both told Polygon they couldn't confirm whether either title was actually in development for the Switch. That's especially odd, since developers like Ubisoft and Square Enix have already announced their intentions to make specific games for the system.
Switch will support Unreal Engine 4: This isn't a huge surprise, since Epic Games was listed as a partner in yesterday's trailer, but it's still nice to get direct confirmation via tweet. While we're at it, the system has Unity game engine support as well (much like pretty much every other device with a microprocessor).
Switch will support Nintendo Amiibo figures: Nintendo tells IGN that your figures will be recognized by compatible games on the new console.

Heh. I don't think Nintendo will go anywhere, I just hope they take a page from Sega's playbook. They'll keep pissing away money and not gain the market share from the big next gen consoles. Because it boils down to power and games. No, a system doesn't need Madden or Call of Duty to be successful. But they need a variety of games that appeal to a large audience. Nintendo continues to try to reinvent the next big thing, and they've not been doing it for awhile. They took a hit for staying with cartridges with the N64, tried to go a new route with mini discs with the GameCube, had complex issues with developers for the Wii, and flopped with the Wii U by bringing a system with no proof of concept to the market. That's not even going into things like the Virtual Boy or many failed DS handhelds.
Developers don't want to to build games for a console that is a step backwards, there are already obstacles with cross platform between PS4 and Xbox One. This is why Nintendo has not gained much market share. Not enough developers, not enough games to appeal to that large audience. They hang onto their IP titles like Zelda, Mario, Metroid, Super Smash, etc because that's the only way to play those titles. Sega did this too, and that's why I use the Dreamcast as an analogy. Dreamcast 2 would have been huge, but Sega just didn't have the big titles like Nintendo, and they had a number of other business mistakes.
My RIP comment is more directed at the fact they will lean on their major titles again for console sales. I'm curious about the portability though, because the DS will lose sales over it. Odd that they aren't protecting that revenue source (which tells me they won't release the same titles across Nintendo platforms). No backwards compatibility with Wii U or 3DS also means the short lived systems will cause people without high disposable incomes the lack of ways to buy in if they already have. Nintendo could easily go into mobile development as well as just develop for bigger consoles. But if they don't hit a more mature audience, they're basically a really cool LeapFrog. I'm sure my son will enjoy all their cute games.
I'm not even touching on the no VR support, which anything new coming out should be supporting. It's just another case of pushing it out too soon.
Androidpk
10-21-2016, 02:16 PM
It's going to be the 3rd party support that makes or breaks this. I'm okay with the no VR support, at this point it still seems too gimmicky and needs a few more years of work for the display and controls to improve.

The 3DS is the highest selling portable at this point (not that there's much competition), outselling the Wii U by a significant amount. I imagine this is Nintendo's way of consolidating their mobile and console markets into one . It bugged me that there were games only available on the 3DS but not the Wii U, I just want to play Pokemon or an actual Animal Crossing game on my Wii U, damn it!

I had MP3 players with more storage a decade ago.

It's supposed to use micro SD for expansion, so something like 128-256gb.

It has expandable memory, but by the time you buy that, a home console controller, the price jumps to over 500 bones.

I missed that. That's probably enough. I went full digital on Wii U, but only ended up using about half of my storage without ever deleting anything. 256gb with some occasional cleaning of the fridge should be manageable for most.

Well, the thing is, games are going to be getting bigger and bigger. It runs into a problem. 1tb is about what you need if you do all digital on a XB1 or a PS4.

I'm about half-digital on my PS4, and still haven't added an extra hard drive, though I mean to at some point. It just made more sense to do that for the Wii U, because I tend to replay Nintendo games to death (currently going through Metroid Prime 2 Echoes for what I think is the 11th time) while my other games tend to be one-and-done affairs. With the PS4, I can usually get by just deleting games after I'm finished with them. In fact, I think Mega Man Legacy Collection is the only PS4 game I've kept on my hard drive longer than a year!

My thoughts are...
Breath of the Wild looks amazing. Will probably rival A Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time. Will really boil down to gameplay and story.
Super Mario Odyssey is something I know many Super Mario fans have wanted. An open world game. I think the implementation of it seems really weird. New Donk City having "humans" over "characters" is just so jarring.
Only 5 release titles with the console means they are putting all their eggs in the Zelda basket. Only 12 more titles with a 2017 launch window are confirmed (I know this number will increase quite a bit after the console is released).
Purchase bundles aren't worth it. (Console $299.99 + Zelda $59.99 + 1 - 2 Switch $49.99 + Has-Been Heroes $19.99 = $429.96 vs bundle price of $437.99) or (Console $299.99 + Zelda $59.99 + 1 - 2 Switch $49.99 + Has-Been Heroes $19.99 + Redout $39.99 + Binding of Isaac Afterbirth $39.99 = $509.94 vs 509.99) My understanding there is a cleaning kit in the bundles, but still... No value.
No pro controller included in any bundle, adding another $70 to the price tag.

Didn't see anyone else mention it, but Nintendo will begin charging for online services this fall.
http://www.polygon.com/2017/1/12/14057166/nintendo-switch-paid-online-service
During the Nintendo Switch reveal event today, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima announced that the Switch will include a paid online service, breaking with Nintendo’s history of including online play for free. Kimishima also said that this paid service will be an improvement from the company’s previous offerings.
...
“Users will be able to try out Nintendo Switch online services for free during a trial period after launch. Then it will become a paid service beginning in the fall of 2017. We will provide additional details on this paid service and its features on our home page at a later date.”
It looks like they'll be doing something similar to XBL and PS+ with a "free" game a month, though the language makes it seem like you can only play it for the month it's available.

With newly-added online play, though? Legend of the Mystical Ninja with online co-op, pls.
But yeah, not so great as an incentive to pay for the service. But as a bonus, I love me some retro games.

A lot of the Nintendo fanboys on other sites keep saying it isn't a home console, it is a mobile. It really isn't either... It is going to be a subpar console at most but it'll probably do well as a handheld... since it doesn't have much competition from other devs, except cell phones I guess(Which lead the market). Everyone keeps forgetting though... PC Masterrace.

All this metroid hate, but no mention of Other M. Did anyone play that? I liked it as a sort of hybrid between platformer and FPS.

Sadly, Metroid fell apart when they started focusing on Samus's backstory.
Charging for the online service is a pretty big hit. They better expand their library. Nintendo seems to think they have a lot of online play options or something...

Mistakes?
Nintendo has sold more consoles (handheld + home) than any other manufacturer.
The top 5 selling handheld consoles are: Nintendo DS, Game Boy/GB Color, PlayStation Portable, Game Boy Advance, & Nintendo 3DS
For home consoles, the Wii ranks 3rd only behind the PlayStation and PS2. The Wii U did horribly, even worse than the GameCube, coming in 14th and 13th respectively.
They've had some rough spots but overall the consoles have performed well.
Nathala Crane

Wii U hasn't done so hot, but the 3DS has performed well and has a good, solid library of 1st and 3rd party games. With the Switch being Nintendo's new home AND portable console, I'm pretty confident it'll do well for them.
Now I'm struggling with whether or not I want to take advantage of Gamestop's current trade-in deal for my Wii U. Judging by previous consoles, I doubt there'll be any sort of backwards compatibility for all my Virtual Console/eShop games. :(

The Wii did great because it was cheap as hell. Switch isn't. They ate optimistically hoping for the same number of sales as the U.
Nathala Crane

The Wii was a cultural fad because of the motion controls along with the cheap price point. The U has done pretty terribly in terms of sales despite it being significantly less expensive than the PS4 and Xbone on release.
Regardless, I don't think it's as easy to dismiss the Switch as people seem to think. It's underwhelming as a home console, but it IS their new portable as well. And when it comes to dedicated handhelds, Nintendo has historically been very successful.

This is a bit expensive for a handheld. and that is the thing, you pay $300 + dollars for a gaming system, you're expecting a home system. What you're getting here is something that requires and additional couple hundred dollars to still be worse than the other two home consoles out there. This system is a mistake. Hey though, we'll see. I really think they should jsut stick to what they're good at, straight up handhelds, instead of trying to make some weird hybrid that nobody asked for.

Tiger's Simon's Quest and Double Dragon were pretty boss, sir. ;P
But outside of phones, I suppose the handheld gaming market is pretty much all Nintendo. I don't think Sony's going to get back into it after Vita flubbed, which is a shame.

Highly doubtful, there have only been 13.36 million Wii U units sold worldwide.

LOL, not quite. Playstation Portable, Sega Game Gear, PS Vita, WonderSwan, N-Gage, and if we go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back to 1989 - Atari Lynx.
