View Full Version : MMO Runescape Auctioning Off Banned Character Inventories

Although players banned from most games usually see their time invested simply wasted as their character and assets are locked away forever, Jagex, the developer of Runescape has another idea. It’s going to anonymously auction off the account bank balances and item inventories, giving people a chance to unlock everything for a price.
The system, known as Bank Bidders is inspired by TV show Storage Wars and will see player accounts listed with their age and reason for banning, but that’s all. You could end up bidding on an account full of cabbages and dirt, but it’s also possible you’ll get hold of something incredibly rare.
Although the feature hasn’t been detailed in full just yet, players have their fingers crossed that bot accounts or those that use cheats to earn items that they shouldn’t be able to have, are not auctioned. Selling lots of them could unbalance the economy.
More likely the banned accounts that are auctioned off will come from those who repeatedly trolled others, or who happened to be mouthing off when a mod was around.
Sorry for the weird source. Hard to link it properly while at work.

Gemstone/Simutronics could stand to make a very nice sum of money off of this type of system. More than a few excellent sets of inventories went away after a ban.

Hell yeah, they could. I wonder if Michaelous got permabanned? Could grab that vultite claidhmore. I can think of lots of examples. Neat idea.

This could easily fucking bankrupt a few people in the effort to get some 1337 gear.

Not sure what they're worried about. Maybe the people who were banned getting their stuff back some day, through new accounts? If so who gives a shit. Make em pay.

Not to mention the Belt of Kai.

This would be pretty awesome.
Take it a step further...bring the characters into the game and put them in the stocks so we can beat them severely, followed by an official execution where the character is finished off for good.

Ensure the GM running Michaelous speaks like him.

I believe bringing in the actual banned characters is taking the idea too far. But auctioning off their stuff via a Storage Wars type approach would be awesome. I expect you could see bids over a billion silvers for some collections.

While I'm sure it could be milked for all the cash they're worth, I always thought just randomly dropping them into the treasure hopper would be the fairest option. It would also add a bit more mystique to obtaining a cool/legendary item as opposed to how you gain one these days (via events etc).

I'm thinking it may be a pain in the ass to figure out where certain items went and what permabanned characters/accounts had on them. I guess they'd have to reactivate the accounts and log onto them to see, so really, it'd probably depend on how many permabanned accounts there are. I know there have got to be tons from when the game was on AOL.

Good idea, and perhaps less effort required on Simu's part.
With this approach, most of the old inventory could be ignored - just put the really good items in the hopper.

GMs could run a data export to determine which permabanned accounts had anything valuable on them, I'd imagine. Registered items only? Why let them disappear forever? How would this impact the economics?

If it was possible to remove items off of permabanned accounts... The Q4 auction would be a nice opportunity to give everyone a chance for cool old/lost items into addition the new promised items.

The problem in GS is things that are assumed to be lost aren't. Many old accounts are actually still open. And finding said items aren't very easy.
I'd be curious to know what items are desired from days of yesteryear.

Kai's belt(?), or something like that, is one brought up multiple times.

Eh... nobody is stripping stuff off characters with active subscriptions. They are talking about banned characters. Characters who aren't coming back.

We don't have too many permanently banned accounts. But I'll check things out.

Wasn't there a nice claidhmore that was lost to a banned account? A Shaalk Claidhmore or something?

There are a few shaalk claidhmores around, one sold not too long ago on here. They are just 4x old style claidhs with iceage names. That being said, the GMs couldn't release more as shaalk.

Those would probably be garbage these days since cleric meditate got nerfed years ago. You know the chimes would too as soon as they showed up.
