Server dies randomly.

Jamus lost server-guy's e-mail address.

It goes down until Server-Guy gets off his ass and reboots.

You know... regardless of the whole Brauden thread thing, I'm beginning to think that if Simu was smart, they'd swallow their pride, buy PsiNet from Jamus for a tidy sum, and run it themselves. Of course, then a lot of the things that people like about it would probably get screwed up. But it seems like people rely on it an awful lot.

You would be amazed.

Two companies I have worked for had crappy IT depts, a shitty intra-net ... yet this huge bandwidth monster.

Why? Because management is dumb and the IT guys liked instant loading.

You'd have to have an incredibly shitty IT department and even shittier management to have an OC-48 pipe that isn't utilized.

Guess they don't know about bandwidth on demand...

Terrible idea. Why would SIMU waste money and buy Psinet when they can just as easily alter/create in game commands for the things Psinet offers?

You don't need a shitty IT dept; you just need ignorant and gullible management.

Just because management knows dick about bandwidth and networking doesn't mean they're shitty. It just means they know dick about how connectivity works.

On the opposite side of the coin, the IT dept isn't shitty either; they're just convincing gamers at heart.

Any decent IT manager would glance over network status reports, including utilization, on occasion.

I really don't know a lot about how it works. So, why don't they just do that if they dislike PsiNet so much? Seems like it would be an easy way to eliminate the need.

Because many of the perks of Psinet would imbalance the game, if everyone had them.

you do know that an oc-48 is 2.488 Gbps right? you do know how much bandwidth that is right? so then obviously you would understand that it takes A LOT to utilize it.

we have 3 DS4s from XO that are completely utilized and needed more bandwidth, so we just opted for an oc-48 from AT & T. we got about 800 Mbps of it used, which is about 1/3 of it, so its relatively unutilized at the moment. must be because my boss (CTO/CEO/owner) is shitty when it comes to IT and management huh?

and as far as bandwidth on demand. LA, riiiight

1) I agree with Mistomeer on this one, any IT manager worth his salt wouldn't let that kind of pipe go unused. It's just dumb regardless of being "a gamer at heart." That or the CIO should be shot.

2) I can just throw it on one of my CMT's here at the house (How much of a moster computer does the psinet server really need to be because if mine's not beefy enough I can get bigger  ), it's on cable but for what it's doing that's plenty and it's always on. I don't forget to pay the bill, and I use the psinet so if I see it's down I'm on it like white on rice on a paper plate with a glass of milk in a snowstorm.

its not that my boss is letting it go unused. we just havent found enough customers to fill up that link yet

Exactly, that's a ton of Internet traffic, so why pay for something you're not using?

No, bandwidth on demand for an ISP would be dumb, but you didn't say ISP in your original post. However, an OC-24 would leave plenty of room for growth, and cover your current needs, and it's half the size of an OC-48, unless you're planning on saturating that OC-48 in the very near future. We can agree to disagree, but paying for something that is 3 times what you're currently using isn't the best move.
It's like buying a bus to move people when a van will do. Utliziation grows, up the link. Any company will gladly sell a customer more.

And as far as bandwidth on demand in LA...
SLA's. Unless I'm wrong, AT&T will offer bandwidth on demand to customers anywhere, including LA.
