On the upside, they're having trouble getting The Big Unit.

Wonder how good he will be with no steroids. If it wasnt the yankees id feel bad for the team as im pretty sure he has several years left on his contract. On the other hand the article said his brother used the steroids too and that sure didnt make him a great hitter. Ill just take joy that the Yankees have to suffer even more emberassment :duh:

Doesn't he have thyroid cancer? Or something other cancer that metastasizes well?

Everyone is having problems getting the big unit. The asking price is rediculous.

I agree with the asking price being way out of control. I wouldnt give up half of what they want for a 40+ year old who maybe has 1-2 years left. I read somewhere they wanted Vazquez, Gordon and Duncan(AAA) and maybe more but those were the names i remember and thats outrageous. If the Yankees offered that and picked up some of the Vazquez contract id jump as fast as i could. Before the yanks got him Javier was touted as one of the best young pitchers around when he was with the expos. Id expect him to regain some of that after relieving himself of the NY stress.

Since when do the Yankees care about price?

Since when do the Yankees care about price?

If it involves $$$ you are right, it doesnt matter cause their pockets are limitless it appears. However RJ isnt a free agent, they will have to trade for him and the d-backs are wanting quite a bit in players. And since the d-backs arnt very competitive these days they wont want some 34+ year old guy with his contract paid in return. Young stars are the one area the Yankee's arnt rich in.

Yeah, but the D-backs aren't asking for all that much trade-wise, and half of the trade is like $8mil a year, if I remember correctly...

Eh, ESPN rumor central content: Take it for what its worth.

Dec. 1 - Even as reports circulated that they might be within days of completing a deal for Randy Johnson, the Yankees apparently have informed the Diamondbacks that they are no longer interested in trading for him.

Of course, this could be simple posturing by the Yankees -- their way of telling Arizona to get serious. Or else.

A baseball official tells ESPN.com's Jayson Stark that Yankees president Randy Levine called Arizona's incoming CEO, Jeff Moorad, and said New York couldn't meet Arizona's asking price, so they were moving on to fill other needs. The teams essentially had agreed that Javier Vazquez would be the centerpiece of any deal, and that the Yankees would send Arizona a large portion of the $19.5 million difference between what was left on Johnson's contract and the three years remaining on Vazquez's deal.

However, Stark reports, at one point Arizona asked for Vazquez, Tom Gordon, pitcher Brad Halsey, several prospects and the cash to pay the salaries of both Vazquez and Gordon. The Yankees' response: No thanks. At another point, Arizona asked the Yankees to find a third team to spice up the deal and handed them a list of 10 pitchers -- Tim Hudson, Barry Zito and A.J. Burnett were believed to be among the 10 -- they would accept.

The Yankees eventually countered by offering Vazquez, Halsey, pitcher Alex Graman, another prospect and enough money to pay a significant chunk of Vazquez's salary. But the Diamondbacks turned that down.

ESPN's Peter Gammons also believes that the supposed Yankees' pullout is merely a ploy and that the teams will consummate a deal next week. Johnson, who wants to play for a contender, is due $16 million next year and likely would demand an extension past 2005 in order to waive his no-trade clause. If the Diamondbacks can't trade or choose not to trade Johnson, he will honor the final year of his contract.

Anyway, on Giambi ... I think we all knew but yea some of us were hoping it wasn't true. 4lbs difference? yea right...

Also kinda wonder how well the Yanks are gonna do once Georgie isn't there with the wide-open billionaire's wallet any more, and when making a buck starts being important again. I figure not so well.

Georges son will probably take over.

But anyway, http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/news/story?id=1937513 an interesting read its written by Victor Conte. Personally I think its just a backhanded way for him to name names and it all seems a little to convienent. He also gets a little pompous at the end. But I still think it's worth a read even if its just for the entertainment value
