Get it while you can: http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com/
The game looks and plays amazing in the little i've experienced so far. Works just fine with controller. Seems fairly stable as well. I'd suggest downloading it even if you don't mean to get to it right away, as who knows if/when Nintendo will force the guy to take it down.
Here's a trailer from 2013:

Put in a few more hours, the game is phenomenal. If you're at all a fan of old school games, this is as good as it gets and its free.

Game was awesome on the gameboy. Thanks for the heads up.
If you like metroid style games also check out axiom verge.

The dropper of files in order to download provided me an ostensibly random string of characters to reproduce.
You're almost close enough to read the letters. They start to come into focus.
And the letters spell GREP
And you say AYFKM?
Bacon and Metroid is a powerful combination.

How is this even possible, isn't it copyright infringment or something?

Nintendo has decided it is infact not possible and has sent the obligatory cease and desist.
If anyone wants it, let me know and I'll send you a copy. Otherwise, it should be available to torrent, but I don't know anything about that stuff so you're on your own.

It looks like this will work. Please use caution downloading this file. I installed it myself, but that doesn't mean it couldn't contain some sort of malicious software.

I read up on this and then looked at the comments. Why do gamers always think that IP and Trademark laws don't apply? Something recently happened with that Nintendo history book thing. Everyone was all "NUH UH! FAIR USE!" Even though 80% of the book was print outs from the games.

I always thought you had to sell it or be making money from it.

Nope, even free can be an infringement if they fill it takes away from the brand or impacts their sales or potential future sales.
I've seen LotR and Warhammer MODS shut doewn for the same thing.

I imagine part of them hopes to show that there is a demand for that IP that isn't being met and can be fully realized in a tangible way. What this guy did with the IP is what Nintendo SHOULD be doing, not fucking Federation Force.

That makes sense, and yes, fucking federation force.... -_-
Not too concerned though because I know Retro Studios is hard at work on a true Metroid game.
