Anyone here familiar with the game Diplomacy? I was thinking it would be fun to run a diplomacy tournament on the Players' Corner for whoever is interested.

I would be the GM and all orders would be sent to me, orders are made once every day. Once the orders are sent to me and executed, I'd create a JPG showing how Europe looks like and post it up.

Each game would consist of 7 players, but I'd be willing to GM several games if needed.

For anyone not familiar with the game, Diplomacy is a lot like Risk, you start off as a country with an army and have to strategically take control of Europe. One key difference is that there is no luck in the game, every move is based solely on your ability to negotiate with other players, form alliances, treaties. You make a move by writing down your order and sending it to the GM who checks that your order is valid and then carries it out.

Since moves are made usually only once every day or other day, you have plenty of time to think of who you want/need to ally with and plan a strategy.

A good site that details the rules in depth is:

http://diplomacy.ellsworthlink.net/rules.html

Would be neat to run such a game on the forums.

I like Diplomacy -

simple, elegant, and (usually) as good as the weakest player.

my living room crowd played off and on for a few years. I'm mediocre (at best) - I'm a tit-for-tat player at heart so I'm less concerned about winning than seeking revenge on someone who has betrayed me.

I suck at Risk. Just don't have the heart of a conqueror. :(

Alright, this is good, if we can get 14 people I won't mind holding 2 seperate games.

I'll search the internet for a decent looking board to use and try and figure out how to run this properly for an online environment.

Also, countries will be assigned randomly.

The countries being assigned randomly aside for a second, can I be Poland (even though, according to the rules, it doesn't exist)? ArkanoGermany needs a pwning.

I'm totally in.

Diplomacy takes place in Pre-World War I Europe. Well at that time Poland simply didn't exist. It had been partitioned between Germany and Russia. Poland was created again at the end of World War I, mainly as a barrier to the Soviet Union.

Damn, no random assignings! I can't get into a game unless I'm a country I enjoy playing!

I've never played Diplomacy, so know nothing of the game. I'd love to try it, but would probably be best off with Switzerland, since they seem to stay out of the whole, bloody mess. :D

Most of the diplomacy games I've played are won by Italy/Russia. A choice of how to carve up Turkey to start, then basic expansion from that point on. From a psychological perspective, Those two definitely have the best starting position if they agree to being non-offensive to start the game.

I have yet to see Turkey win a game. The only other empire I've seen win is france. I'd like to see Axis+Allies though. That is a very even game, although it does require dice.

Don't make fun of our stupid eagle!

Axis and Allies is an awesome game, but unfortunately, the longer you play the more hopeless the situation is for the Axis. Unless you have a REALLY good Axis player, you're pretty much screwed.

I'm going to hold one game for now just to see how it works out and how to best run it for future games. The maximum number of players is 7 and we have 7 players currently.

After this first round though, I will be open to running multiple games at once. And heck, if you have any friends who would be interested who don't post on the PC, by all means let them know about it.

I think we could end up seeing some very interesting games, even for those just watching the game unfold. After every move it's my intention to post a summary of what happened, acting as a commentator of sorts (although don't expect me to be a very good one!) so I'll comment if I think countries are allying or if countries backstab one another and whatnot.

I just hope war doesn't break loose outside of the game and onto the whole of the Players' Corner!
