Large Shield > Tower Shield?

I read this somewhere on PC recently. I believe it was a comment about, in the end, a large shield being more beneficial mechanically than a tower shield.

Is there any merit to this?

I figured so. It'd be a paladin in full plate, with no dodge planned until way after I would cap.

Maneuvers, I guess if I went tower shield I'd be interested in propup. Other than that, probably just the defensive stuff. Specialization, block the elements, spell block, etc.
