Chapter the First: Something isn't right.

I decided to spend the week at my parents house. Mostly for free food, and because I don't get to see my younger brother very often, so this seemed to be a good chance. I awoke this morning at 9:45 to the sound of a vacuum cleaner outside the bedroom.

Chapter the Second: An upsetting sight.

I open my door, and see the maid vacuuming the hallway. Now, some would wonder if I was upset because the maid was vacuuming before noon. However, this wasn't what upset me. The thing that upset me is that the maid was working on Thanksgiving. After some discussion with my mother, I found out the maid has been at it since 7 am, making sure the house would be presentable for guests.

Chapter the Third: Discussion.

Am I the only person who thinks that the maid should have had Thanksgiving off? Or are people who work as maids and personal servants needed more on busy days like Thanksgiving and Christmas, and should be compensated accordingly?

I don't know, I just thought it was a bit unpleasant for my parents to have the maid work instead of spend time with her family. Perhaps it's the best way to do it, but I personally am going to check to make sure my fathers accountant isn't cold because my father won't give him another lump of coal.

{Edited because capital letters are cool and all, but should only be used on proper nouns and to start a sentence. Not because I think they are perty.}

No, you are not. My family has been fortunate enough to have a wonderful woman clean our house every week for the past 15 years or so. She has become a welcome part of our family and we have her for dinner and social activities unrelated to her work.

Needless to say, she would never have had to work on a holiday. We would prefer to clean our house ourselves and know she was spending the day with her family.

In other words, I agree with you wholeheartedly.

I know your parents personally and am not suprised that she had them come and "make the house presentable" today. It does sadden me however. Next time ask her to have them do it the day before. Its not like your family does enough in one to night mess up all the work. I am glad I go to my parents thanksgiving instead of yours. :grin: Woo on Beer and Turkey with a side of Football!
