Before hitting a private fundraiser in Los Angeles, Donald Trump taped a guest appearance on ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live," where he fielded questions from the late-night host on a range of topics -- including transgender bathrooms (http://www.cbsnews.com/news/ted-cruz-donald-trump-spar-over-transgender-bathroom-law/), and whether he'd debate Bernie Sanders.

Kimmel asked Trump if he'd be willing to debate Sanders, given that Hillary Clinton had turned her primary opponent down for a California debate. Trump declared he would -- as long as the proceeds go to charity.
As he accepted the hypothetical debate, Trump asked, perhaps jokingly, how much Sanders would be willing to pay him -- for charity -- then conceded that it would be fine if a network were willing to put up the money. Trump also said he has never met Sanders.

Sanders took to Twitter right away with his response:
Game on. I look forward to debating Donald Trump in California before the June 7 primary.
— Bernie Sanders (@BernieSanders) May 26, 2016 (https://twitter.com/BernieSanders/status/735689625407131648)

There was no immediate reaction from the Clinton campaign.

He's gaining PR for Sanders in the role Clinton thinks is hers by right. Debating Trump as the nominee. Certainly doesn't help Clinton, and can only help Sanders. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

Seems like easy money for any network willing to stake the cash upfront. Ratings would be through the roof.

High enough ratings to recoup the $10 million?

High enough ratings to recoup the $10 million?

The highest debate ratings I can easily google was 16.9 million for one of the Republican debates. Big Bang Theory episodes average around that mark this season (http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/the-big-bang-theory-season-nine-ratings-38076/). An episode of BBT cost nearly that much taking into account both production and cast salary (http://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-28658258). Perhaps the term easy money is a stretch, but between advertising revenue and likely being able to write part of the expense off as it is a donation to charity, I bet they could profit off the deal without difficulty.

Right, didn't even consider the tax write off. I won't be surprised if Fox jumps on this. I know TYT (the young turks) have offered to host the debate but I don't know if they have $10m laying about in a slush fund.

Some are definitely worse than others. Nevada state convention for example. How many news networks ran the story that Bernie supporters were being violent and throwing chairs, despite there being evidence showing otherwise. Seems like it is better to be first and wrong than last and correct.

They shouldn't. Hillary has been refusing more debates with Sanders for some time now. Her debating Sanders could only hurt her anyways, even if she pasted him in it it wouldn't help.

"Fox News is in back-channel negotiations for an event featuring Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders before California's June 7 primary, according to Fox News anchor Bret Baier."It is not a joke and those back channel discussions are continuing and there will be some event in California," he said on "Special Report with Bret Baier" Thursday.

In a Friday interview with WMAL's Brian Wilson, Baier said that the talks with the two campaigns "are progressing" and that there's "real interest."

The details, he added, were still being hammered out, but it would either be a "full-blown debate" or perhaps something in a town hall format."

I think it safe to say this will happen. I can only imagine the responses right now from camp Hillary. The scene from the movie Fear and Loathing in Last Vegas where the parking attendant is yelling at Depp comes to mind, "Sir you can't do this! You can't park here, Sir!"

http://thehill.com/blogs/ballot-box/presidential-races/281556-trump-decides-he-wont-debate-bernie-sanders

Donald Trump on Friday said it would be “inappropriate” to hold a debate with Bernie Sanders, throwing cold water on an idea that had captivated the political world in recent days.

"As much as I want to debate Bernie Sanders — and it would be an easy payday — I will wait to debate the first place finisher in the Democratic Party, probably Crooked Hillary Clinton, or whoever it may be," Trump said in a statement.

The presumptive GOP presidential nominee added that it "seems inappropriate" to debate the "second place finisher."
Trump had said on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” on Wednesday night that he would be willing to debate Sanders if the proceeds would go to charity.

“Yes, I am,” Trump said. "How much is he going to pay me? If he paid a nice sum toward a charity, I’d love to do that.”

Trump added to the speculation throughout the week, telling reporters Thursday he would "love to debate Bernie."

“If we can raise for maybe women's health issues or something — if we can raise $10- or $15 million for charity, which would be a very appropriate amount. I understand the television business very well," Trump said Thursday.

But the businessman backtracked Friday, saying the debate would let networks "make a killing" on the event without donating to charitable causes.

The Sanders campaign said in a statement shortly before Trump’s that they had received offers from at least two television networks.

"We look forward to a substantive debate that will contrast the very different visions that Sen. Sanders and Mr. Trump have for the future of our country,” the statement said.

After hearing the news that Trump had backed away, Sanders said he hopes the billionaire changes his mind and asked: “Well Mr. Trump, what are you afraid of?”

And in a second statement, Sanders hit Trump for flip-flopping on the subject and touted matchup polling between the two.

“There is a reason why in virtually every national and statewide poll I am defeating Donald Trump, sometimes by very large margins and almost always by far larger margins than Secretary Clinton. There is a reason for that reality and the American people should be able to see it up front in a good debate and a clash of ideas," the statement read.

Sanders and his aides pushed hard for the debate, hoping to extend his spot in the limelight. Sanders trails Hillary Clinton in the Democratic presidential race, but has vowed to stay in the race until the Democratic convention this summer.

A debate in California would also provide free advertising to Sanders in the biggest primary on the calendar.

Remember when people were willing to debate each other without money being involved? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Bob Arum’s Top Rank Promotions has offered to promote a proposed Donald Trump vs. Bernie Sanders debate, pledging to donate the proceeds, a minimum of $20 million, to charity.

“It’s the debate of the century between two of the top pound-for-pound politicians in the country — Mr. Trump, the Republican Party’s presumptive nominee and Senator Sanders, the Democratic candidate,” Mr. Arum said in a press release. “We have two contenders ready, willing and able to go mano a mano over the most important issues facing the United States. And I am ready to promote it.”

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump on Friday said he would not debate Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders because it would be "inappropriate" to square off against the candidate who currently trails Hillary Clinton in the Democratic primary fight.
