a Mandis Crystal shard
Background:
The War of Nations (WoN) was a multi-year quest that finalized in 2004. The seeds for the storyline were planted in 1996, believe it or not, but the bulk of the action took place in 2003-2004 when Baron Hochstib of Jantalar decided to turn on the Turamzzyrian Empire and eventually attack Wehnimer's Landing, amongst other places. He brought forth his weapon: the Mandis Crystal, found by the empire near River's Rest. This crystal absorbed all magical power in its vicinity, effectively neutralizing the mages, sorcerers, and other magic users fighting against his forces. Eventually the adventurers of Wehnimer's Landing destroyed the crystal, rending it to shards.

Function:
The Mandis Crystal shard can be used in forging to create what was during WoN referred to as a "bane weapon" (not to be confused with bane weapons that impart benefits against a specific type of creature). These bane weapons had the ability to detect when active Mandis Crystals were near. Today, one of these weapons has two primary benefits: a script when unsheathing and a short show description.
