View Full Version : Just got back - incredibly lost

Howdy all -
So here's the thing, I played GS3 back in the days of AOL. Something like two decades ago? (Just a second while I step away from the keyboard and contemplate my age...jeez.)
Anyway, now that the palpitations have stopped - I've wandered back to GS4 on a free account to dabble and see if I like it. I created a character yesterday and in the first few minutes some things came flooding back; inspect, remembering to put things in MY containers, skinning, searching, all that. Way back in the day, the only two starting options were Icemule Trace (groan) or Wenheimer's Landing (Hooray). I started yesterday, though, in Ta'Vaalor. Needless to say, that was a new one. I went through the first few iterations of the newbie sprite, but I feel like there's more I need to know. I've actually wielded my search-fu on the forums here, but I'm wondering if anyone has a reasonably comprehensive list of 'here's how to actually get started with a kind of productivity loop' or anything. Maybe a map - those are helpful, I hear.
Oh, and I went the same route I went before; a human rogue. I initially started an elf rogue, but I figured doing that had put me in Ta'vaalor and went human thinking I'd end up in WL. Nope. Ah, the days of picking chests for tips at the tree in WL. Such goodness.
Anyway, all help is appreciated. Thanks guys (and gals).

First off, welcome back. Second, If you didn't already do so, there's an NPC in Malwith Inn in Ta'vaalor much like the Raging Thrak in Landing for some free EXP. There's plenty of groups sporadically showing up throughout the day who would love to help out a returner and don't forget to hit up the mentors!

Immediate thanks to both. I'd have never remembered Lich on my own, but I think I remember it from my last GS effort - appreciate that.
Princess - The Raging Thrak! Oh man what good times. I remember the guy; you had to go to his table and listen to a story, right? Man. Good stuff.
Two questions; is it possible to make a 'run' to WL from Ta'Vaalor, and two - ....mentors?

Use a travel guide token. It's a long trip that is normally suited for characters 25+ though.

You should have gotten a Travel Token that you can use to get to WL. Painfully slow but you can just set it and forget it basically. Just need to respond occasionally or download ;keepalive and run it when you get lich. Should be quite a few people/mentors about, especially in the WL area. Or just stop in TSC and ask around a bit.
If you are able to get lich running, ;narost is a great addition for maps. I forget if it's included now or not. To add these two I've mentioned to start automatically - ;autostart add keepalive (or narost, rnum, uberbar, etc) Other good ones are ;rnum, ;wood, ;metal, and ;uberbar if you are running Stormfront.
With lich you'll see Room Numbers now so you can ;go2 For example, if you want to go to the Landing TSC - ;go2 228 and you'll be there rather quickly depending on where you start. If you want to do it alone from TV to WL, it will also cost you around 2200 silvers for the cart rides and ferry guy. They've reduced the times a bit so it's a little faster. The Vipershroud tree is rough and occasionally you'll hit a few nasties on the way if you're really young.

Yea, the wiki is a great place for info as well as Taernath mentioned above there.
And don't worry. Stick with it even when you feel most lost. It can definitely be overwhelming at first. I too returned after about 15-20 years to a lot of this new stuff.
Did you get your old characters back by chance?
Ltlprprincess
05-04-2016, 10:12 AM
You can. I'm not sure if F2P offers a token at start up... they probably do, but you can use a travel token to run from TV to Landing for free and not have to worry about getting gibbed on the way there. Mentors are players who can answer questions you might have or find the answers as needed. If you went through the sprite quest, you should be somewhat familiar with Silverwood Manor. Locations are in TV, Landing, and Icemule. Just go there and ring the bell.

Ah, gotcha. Thanks again for the tips. As long as you guys keep being super helpful and I'm not getting ridden out of town on a rail, I'm going to keep abusing the privilege of help (mainly because I'm at work and a lot of the GS websites, like the wiki, are blocked. Lame, right? And I'm one of the bosses around here. No justice).
So check for a token, get to WL where I have some familiarity, install Lich front end - for mac, sadly - get the exp from the inn folks, and proceed.
So here's my level 2 question that I was never really able to hurdle from my previous days, as I remember. And, this may be a product of having outdated maps and no friends (woe is me). But, I don't really understand what to do once the catacombs are exhausted of their potential, if that makes sense? I'm not sure what to do, what area I should be moving towards or killing, that kind of thing. Is that info on the wiki?

What class? And do you understand the XP mechanics changes about gaining TP within the level, and being able to adjust your skills on the fly via GOALS verb rather than checking in?

Actually, ;narost might be your best friend here. For the most part, you won't be wandering too far outside of Landing as a newbie, and ;narost features maps that Tsoran had made with creatures and levels that go with them. Also, there's the Adventurer's Guild which will give you bounties based on level and you can earn EXP that way.

Well, if you're dead set on getting to the Landing you should be able to just retire your character and start over there, unless there's some kind of F2P restriction on where you create a character.
As far as the ratacombs, it depends on your class/setup. The New Player Experience™ has been overhauled a lot over the years. You already know about the sprite and Raging Thrak, so that can get you to around level 2. If you don't feel like hunting, you can run messages or make iron, up to about level 5. After that, maybe hobgoblins. All casters now have access to 1700, a free spell that can be either bolted or warded making things a lot easier at lower levels. Make sure you check out the Adventurer's Guild, which gives you tasks to do for extra experience/silver/points.
If you don't know what to hunt, look at a critter's page towards the bottom and find something close to it in level:

Whirlin - human rogue, currently level...2? And you bring up a good question/point. Advancement is something I'm not...great with. I auto-statted and auto-distributed my points starting off. I earned more, obviously, and I'm 90% sure that I hit level 2 last night and manually distributed my points (total guesswork) via GOALS. I checked in(n) when I logged out of the game last night because I figured that was safest (and 'logout' didn't work, if I'm honest).

Taernath - Fair play, I'm not sure why I'm dead set on WL, except that when I did play, that's where most people actually WERE. Especially the 'newer' (lower, younger, greener, etc) folks. If Ta'Vaalor is just as good for a new person, I can stay there and save myself some trouble. I just don't want to never see other people. I remember the huge benefits from being able to 'join up for blurs' when you're really low level. The desire to go to WL could be nothing more than associated familiarity and the supposition that it's the default 'newbie area.' If Ta'Vaalor has one of those, I'm all in.
As far as spell slinging goes...eh. I'm hesitant. That's something I never grasped (we're not working with a high IQ individual, here..) when I played and I wasn't sure if that was newbie friendly, either. I remember playing a rogue and enjoying picking locks, but there's a plethora of things that I didn't really understand even back then - like what descriptors on weapons mean what, how to tell if something is better than another (regarding equipment), and of course - spells and how to cast/use them.

Actually, TV is a good place to start and you can make some decent silvers there. I like it because it is quieter but still enough people to get some help occasionally. Nowadays, being under level 10, you can depart pretty easily and just keep going if no one rescues you. But, the f2p model does hinder some of that stuff and I'm not as familiar with everything. The wiki that was shown to you earlier has a great list of what the f2p challenges are. But, you can do f2p no problem, there are a bunch of people out there who have been playing the f2p since the start of it and enjoy it.

Awesome, I'll probably do that, then. I saw a hunting script over in another subforum that I may try if I'm feeling frisky. But, anxious to pick the brains of the folks here about the nuances and what I need to know to maximize my time - see above for spells and identifying items and whatnot.

The one thing about Ta'Vaalor to know is that the RP is a little xenophobic there, for better and for worse. If you're in Ta'Vaalor and are a plain old elf, ask anyone with a Legionnaire title for something and they'll definitely help you. (Mine would gladly get you outfitted with whatever gear you need.) If you're a dark elf or a half-elf, it's a coin flip. If you're any other race, they most likely will.
The rest of the locals are quite helpful as well, and are likely to care far, far, less about your race. There's not a ton of mass spells mostly because wizards are scarce in Ta'Vaalor. I'll start sending mine over from Illy from time to time this week to help out.

tgo made one called ;auto-level if I recall too that will get you up to at least 10 trainings. But be sure to stay at the keyboard or play at your own risk. And what someone else mentioned about TV. It can be a little annoying with having to buy papers to sell and buy stuff but I think they just bug you about it until you're 10 trains. Once you get to that point, then you have to have the document in order to sell stuff - unless you're an elf citizen. Something like that.

It's a little better, a little worse.
You have to have the document on your person and an empty hand to buy/sell stuff past level 10. The papers cost money, which seems to be based on both race and level. If you're a citizen, you still need the document (which should be free) unless you have a citizenship pin. Pins aren't automated, they're distributed via GM event that is not very common. Only Vaalor Elves can get citizenship. If you're an elf with a different culture, you can only be a partial citizen. I've never played a partial citizen, but I know they don't get pins. I presume that their documents are free.

This is definitely an aspect I'm not really familiar with. Also kind of encapsulates some of my returning issues. If I understand what you're saying, after 10 trains I have to go somewhere and buy an item (papers) that will allow me to buy/sell to vendors in Ta'Vaalor while I'm there?

And to get in through the gates without RT (for the guards to stop and lecture you about said papers). You'll need to buy a new set every month from Wyvern Hall all the way at the north end of town.
Thankfully, it's a Ta'Vaalor-only thing; no other towns do something like that. If you're a regular, it's not super annoying, it's just one of those things where every once in a while, you go, "oh yeah, I have to put my runestaff away to sell these skins" or "oh darn I have to run back and buy new papers again". If you're not a regular, then it's a much bigger pain because you pretty much always need new papers.

Gotcha. I'm still trying to be open minded about starting in a city I don't remember/wasn't there. I'm also considering a re-roll at this point because I'm reading the new player guide (found a way to get to the GSWiki at work, muwahaha) I think I picked the wrong race and shouldn't have auto'ed my stats. And I didn't know what I was doing in my first GOALS thing. So there's that. Anyway, point is there may still be an off chance I end up in another city, but as of now I think the learning curve is best addressed if I mostly stay put, so buying papers it is..

Yeah, definitely don't auto the stats. You want to max logic at 100 from the start, plus put strength, Dexterity, etc. high for the first 30 days. Within that first 30 days, you get 5 times to check in to an INN and adjust your stats. Right before your first 30 days is up, adjust your stats to what you want them to stay at. And first 30 days is the first 30 after creating character/rerolling. You get a fresh 30 day period after you create a character or reroll. During that 30 days, you can adjust your skills as much as you want and they change immediately, or you can adjust your stats up to 5 times.

Yes, but LOG also affects the amount of experience in your 'pool', and how much you earn per pulse.
Another option is to place your stats for growth, so that they will all be at or near 100 at max level. For that, I use a stat calculator:
http://cmnservicesgroup.com/lostranger/a-growth-gs4.php
But the reality is, for F2p accounts the rate at which you earn experience becomes extremely slow from level 15 onwards.

This is something you have to think about long term. Simutronics created F2P really as a way to draw old players back in and to a lesser extent, give new players an easy way to sample the game, in hopes that both groups will eventually subscribe. The way they structured F2P isn't so that you can enjoy all of the features of the game long term. F2P is definitely fine for either the first 60-90 days or if you're going to be a very casual player (2-4 hours per week). Any more than that and I'd imagine you'll feel the itch to subscribe. I came back in early 2014, was standard for about 6 months, premium for about 9 months, back to standard for about 4 months, then went F2P because of some financial concerns, and I'm having trouble not wanting to at least go back to a standard account.

This is almost exactly my line of thinking. With what Taernath said my first thought was, 'ok, I need to structure a character assuming that I'll be converting to a paid subscription at the 'cap' or whatnot.' So I guess I need to reroll and figure out how to do that best.

I agree with this entirely. I dont necessarily have an interest in script hunting because I wont be at the stage in the game where I feel comfortable just auto-doing something. I was mainly looking at scripts for travel if I was going to go to WL or something. Didn't know the trick about the inn, though. Appreciate that!

Well, depending on how much you play, "cap", meaning level 100, will probably take you 2-3 years, if not more. And that's assuming you have a subscription. Because of the way Simu slows experience absorption (and therefore the pace of leveling) after level 15, unless you are just the most hardcore Gemstone gamer playing 20 hours plus a week, being F2P would probably take you friggin forever to cap. Someone else can probably summarize how to place stats other than Logic for the first 30 days. After your first 30 days, what you want to decide for stats is this...
1. Do I want to set my stats to maximize (be at or close to 100) at cap (level 100) - this means you will never have to adjust your stats in the future, but your training points will be a bit lower earlier on and hunting (and really therefore leveling) will be a bit tougher in your earlier levels (0-40/50) than they will be in later levels (50-100)
OR
2. Do I want to set my stats to maximize (be the highest they can be) at level 30-50. This gives you more training points earlier on to be a bit more diversified in your training or to fit more skills in than if you set your stats just to maximize at level 100. It also makes hunting or doing other tasks a bit easier than if you had set your skills just to maximize at cap. However, if you ACTUALLY plan to get to cap (level 100) and keep going, sometime near cap (level 75+?) you're going to wand to FIX your stats to be close to 100 at cap. To do this, you would need what's called a FIXSTAT, which costs about 17+ million silvers ($136 in today's silver/cash exchange rate) to purchase. You can also purchase one of these using a million or so bounty points through the Adventurer's Guild, which by level 75+ (assuming you've subscribed) you should be able to earn through doing bounties.

What I meant by 'cap,' the way I understood it originally put, was 15 trains. It seems to me, based on a totally rudimentary understanding, that at 15 trains it would make the most sense to maximize the benefits of subscription. And, further, I'd go the stat route of making life a little simpler on the WAY TO 100 rather than best once I get there..

Benefits of subscription start day 1, and are significant.
In the first 30 days, you can hit level 20 by leveraging the gift of lumnis (3x XP for 3 hours, followed by 2x XP for 3 hours, every week). Furthermore, with constant ability to change your skills at a whim, and change your stats 5 times within your first 30 days, you can gain a good amount of XP quickly.

Gotcha, then yes, that makes total sense. And the stat route is totally subjective. When I came back after 15 years, I set my stats to max at level 100 and got my wizard to 37 without much issue before putting that account on hiatus while I switched to F2P. When I rolled up an F2P rogue though (which I'll end up subscribing that account soon dammit) I realized I couldn't make him the character I wanted him to be by just settings stats to max at level 100. Some of this has to do with patience, and I find that I have more patience with some professions than I do with others.

Hey guys - so I rerolled my character last night. Fortunately I was able to keep the same name (thanks for the tip on retiring the character, whomever said that) and I followed the GSWiki rogue guide for starting suggestions and stats. I had a few points left over from what was recommended so I trained a few extra times in first aid and lock picking. Of course; I am still in Ta'Vaalor, so I think that'll be home for a little while. The 'papers' thing is kind of irksome, but for now the plan is to get my feet under me. I slayed many fanged rodents and completed the sprite quest last night - successfully reaching level 1, but I havent 'trained' yet. Should do that tonight.
Also, for those that pointed it out, I DO in fact have a travel token on the F2P account.
Things are slowly coming back - bundling pelts and many of the things I'm sure the veteran players would roll their eyes about. But, still fun just like I remember. I may do the really annoying thing and keep posting to this thread to keep my newbie questions condensed to one place.
If anyone sees Markhan moving around in TV, by all means give me a wave.

If you're an elf with a different culture, you can only be a partial citizen. I've never played a partial citizen, but I know they don't get pins. I presume that their documents are free.
My sylvankind was a partial citizen, and was able to receive a pin. It might have looked different from full citizen pins, though.
This thread is making me want to reopen my account, damnit.

How long has it been since you played. The pin thing has changed, as far as I recall, and last Mazreth (current TV guru) stated at the OOC meeting was that only full citizens get citizen pins.

Too long, apparently! Good to know if I do come back I need to hide my pin from anyone who might want to repossess it, heh.
Man, what an annoying thing to change.

Don't think they are repossessing if you currently own one so you should be okay.

As I understand it, pins = citizenship in Ta'Vaalor, and only certain people can get them. Otherwise you have to get new papers every 30 days?

You can only get a pin when lesser actuary Thaon comes about to deliver them. If you are a full citizen, you still need papers, but you get them for free. Once you have the pin, so long as you have it in your inventory (you don't have to wear it), you don't need papers.

Ok, I haven't gotten any hatemail or flames yet, and you guys are awesome, so I'm going to shamelessly continue to ask questions. Hopefully this little exercise in helping the new guy can help people along that may come back down the road.
I'm reading the GSWiki archived post from 2011 - it's an OOC meeting (I get OOC) at Ta'Vaalor apparently conducted by a GM. I was lead here by Princess' reference to 'lesser actuary Thaon.' Beyond this article, I can't find anything about this person/title. So I guess what I'm looking for is a way to kind of catch up on the lingo? I don't know what the Legion is, nor do I know the importance of titles. Anyone have a reference?

Don't worry, I'm sure someone will initiate you soon enough on the negative rep reward system on here. It's a rite of passage!
Remember the old days when getting the "Lord" title was quite the difficult task? Well, now there is Great Lord, High Lord, and some titles you get for special events. I'm not sure of the Legion one though I'm guessing it is if you are pure elf and sign up to be part of the Military in Vaalor. A new one just came out and only a few hold the honorary title of Palestra.
So, there are a bunch out there to check out depending what you are interested in.
We're glad to see some fresh meat in the game, it doesn't happen all too often. Most of the time a new player is just another character someone else has rolled up for fun or to be a locker mule.

Hey speaking of things happening that I don't understand - Is there a calendar anywhere that's up-to-date with stuff that's happening around the world? I mean, I remember back in the day there were ships and traveling vendors and whatnot and that just sailed way over my head.

After a visit to see my little one this weekend, I'm back on the GS grind this week. That said, need a little help with 2 things from Friday that I ran into.
1 - Is there a best place or best way to 'rest' the mind? I remember there being a way to accelerate the process, but I'm not sure anymore..
2 - Foraging question; I got a quest from the herbalist to forage up some red cranberries. That's all fine and good. But, my success rate is dismal. Anyone have tips on foraging?

1) Node... TSC works
2) Be a ranger... Supposedly survival helps... but not significantly enough for me to see even the slightest difference.

Are you still F2P? There are specific restrictions on foraging, and being F2P makes success less likely.
https://gswiki.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/F2P_subscription#Miscellaneous
Foraging is harder. F2P cannot take the last two forageables out of a room. Max 15 items per hour. Foraging pass removes restrictions and makes foraging easier.

https://gswiki.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/F2P_subscription#MiscellaneousMy experimentation puts the F2P forgaging penalty at somewhere between -35 and -40. It's not actually visible in the roll, so it's a little hard to pin down.
That's pretty painful. If you're not a ranger, I'd ask someone to forage them for you.

Here my tip: if someone says they have a pendant piece, offer 1m silvers. If they accept and the deal goes through, brag about it on lnet and the PC. Profit baby!

That can't be a flat number, can it? I have non-f2p guys who are singled in perception/survival/whatever that only have 5% chances to find peppermint according to the roll.

I haven't done much F2P foraging because it's terrible but using a rogue, I was getting critical failures (pricked finger, pulled out of hiding, etc.) on 30+ endrolls, and only found easy herbs on an open roll.

I've gotten similar with my F2P Rogue.

So I'm closing in on level three and I've been doing some reading - seems like an Ora weapon and/or shield is my next best bet. However, At lvl 2 I went in to see about a mithril weapon and noticed 2 things. One, ordering one is prohibitively expensive. And two - the pawnshop in WL just...doesn't have the low level stuff. Is there a place for shopping around that wont break the bank for lowbies?

Also - if someone doesn't mind; how do I determine what KIND of armor I'm wearing? I mean, my character has a 'soft leather jerkin,' and I understand that it falls under the 'soft leather' category (working off this: https://gswiki.play.net/mediawiki/index.php/Armor ) but I don't know if it's full, light, reinforced, etc...

If you have lich you can download and run ;testme and it will test everything your character can possibly test on it and tell you all what it is, including what kind of armor it is (double leathers, fulls, etc.)
It also finds zests and all of that fun stuff. If you can to skip the zest test portion just start the script as ;testme skip

Here is an example of the summary ;testme gives at the end of all testing. This is with ;testme skip because my armor actually does have zests.
*************************
a set of dark claw-marked leathers
Look description: The suit of deep black leathers is marred with a multitude of claw marks that have left the finely grained leather shredded and gaping in a several spots. Despite the disrepair of the leathers they still appear to offer a modicum of protection to their wearer ... so long as their opponents are all unlucky and blind!" A strange necrotic haze radiates from the leathers.
Inspect/Analyze Information
Alteration restrictions: Yes
Max lightened: Yes
Armor coverage: torso, arms, legs, neck, and head
Armor: double leather
Wearable location: chest
Ensorcell Information
Ensorcelled: Yes
I didn't find any zests.

@Tgo01 - slightly techy question but still regarding my unbelievably lost-ness.
Can Stormfront and Lich be run off of a flash drive? I'm asking because my work computer is iPrism protected and I can't install anything. But, I can get it on a flash drive and run it that way. Just not sure if the capability is there..

I know scandisk makes flash drives with their own operating systems, others likely to do to. Using something like that it should be simple enough to run stormfront and lich from your flash drive.
