View Full Version : IE 6.0 on XP and Downloading Files

The recent update to the IE for Windows XP implemented additional security checks. One of the checks for downloading files gave an extra message box before the download window that warned me about downloading potentially harmful files. So, for zip files, I unchecked the box that said to always ask befor downloading that type of file. But now, everytime I click on a zip file link, it just downloads automatically, and I don't get to choose where to put the file or to cancel the download.

I've looked for an option to change it back to the way it was, but I've had no luck finding it. If anyone could help me out, I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks

Go to the internet options, and then click on the advanced tab. Scroll all the way down to the security section.

See if those are unchecked (or any others that may look like it could affect downloads, I was taking a guess). See if that works out.

That didn't work, but thanks.

Or check the security tab in the internet options for automatic prompting.

Edited to add that you need to click on custom level for the options, although I know Jonty is enough of a smart cookie to know that. ;)

Ths sucks. I've checked a few things including your suggestions, but nothing is working. I tried DLing a large zip file so I'd have enough time to uncheck the "Close this dialog box when download cmpletes" check box, but when downloaded it, I didn't even see the download window.

Did you try Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced -> Restore Defaults?

Also check Security Settings and see if they're at the default level if that's not checked.

Yep, I restored the defaults.

I fixed it. I had to uncheck, then re-check the "Confirm open after download" checkbox.

Thanks for trying.
