I want to get a smoker. Recommendations of types and brands would be great. I don't want to spend a lot, probably under $200, mostly because I've never really used one before so I don't wanna invest a bunch into something I'm not sure I'll do a lot. I prefer propane though electric'll do too. I guess I can play with charcoal if it comes at a good price point and is highly recommended too though.

A big plus is being able to keep it outside in the elements. I don't want to have to drag that thing in and out of the house after use.

I have a propane, have had it for years, any part of it you heat will wear out with time and you will have to replace but otherwise mine has been great. I had charcoal before, I would never go back, at least not to a vertical charcoal. If I was set on charcoal I would get an offset box smoker.

I love my propane, I can do a 14lb turkey and 4 slabs of baby backs in it at the same time. The big advantage to propane is the ability to regulate heat, especially if it is cold out, like Christmas and Thanksgiving, charcoal can be a challenge to keep hot, where propane is just a slight turn of a valve. I have a cheap cover for mine, when the sun beats it down, just buy a new one, seems to do a good job protecting it from the elements.

Yeah, I was thinking propane because I often have about 4 or 5 full propane tanks sitting around for my various heaters and my grill and my crawfish pot burner.

Just smoke cigarettes and blow the smoke in a box with meat in it.

The big green egg is supposedly amazing from what my friends have told me but may be a little more than you want to shell out

If you're looking to stay under $200, I think your best options are either to find a local place that refurbishes gas ones and gives you a warranty, or get a Webber kettle with a smoking tray.

No but you can marinate it in some marijuana butter.

I have this one which I have been using for two years now. I haven't had to replace anything. I have smoked almost everything in it, turkey, chicken, brisket, pork shoulder, ribs, and fish. It's under your price range and meets your criteria of propane and has a cover.

I can't help you, just so you know. I don't cook. I leave that to the professionals (women).

I've seen someone with that one before. I'll probably settle on that one, because I've heard good things about it from them as well.

I have a masterbuilt electric smoker and have had great luck with it, I use mine at least once every two weeks if not more. also invest in a good wireless thermometer, i have found that built in thermometers arent all that accurate.

I was looking at this masterbuilt electric one that has bluetooth and syncs with your phone or tablet and all this crazyiness, but it is about $400ish. I'm just not sure how much I'm going to use it yet, so I don't want to really drop that much on one just yet.

Get yourself a Weber Smokey Mountain and be done with it. I've had mine for over 10 years, uncovered in the elements and it hasn't showed signs of rusting (and I want it so I can buy a bigger one). You'll get better flavor from a charcoal smoker than from pellets/electric/gas.

I have a Cameron's stovetop smoker since my HOA won't allow a full grill/smoker. I've done chicken and turkey in it so far but haven't tried anything low and slow yet. Heard its good for fish but since saltwater fish and I don't agree haven't yet. Gets rave reviews with salmon and it was 50 bucks.

Get a vertical smoker.

Don't get electric or charcoal.. electric sucks and while I LOVE charcoal grills for the taste, they are too hard to keep the even temperatures you need for smoking. Go for a propane smoker.

From there, it's all about the wood you use to impart flavor.

We have one of the Brinkmann Smokers. They're extraordinarily cheap charcoal smokers... I love it.

I realize you can't argue with the convenience of propane, but this good charcoal smoker is great.

I've had mine for about 2 years already, and it's starting to show signs of wear and tear, this (it's third season, will likely be its last)... we try to smoke a ham or pork butt/shoulder once a week, or maybe every other week. About 2/3rds of a bag of charcoal, and lots of chips... I soak half the chips in water... Soaked chips: Less Heat, more smoke... Dry chips: More Heat, less smoke. It's a good way to regulate temperature. Basically just set an alarm, check on it every hour to adjust chips/temperature.

Can't argue with the price, and I've been incredibly happy with the results.
