So. Most of you saw my "INTERVIEW!1!!1!1!" thread. That was a piece of good news, yes oh yes. About three weeks ago, I heard some really good things about the Palms (a name it itself in Vegas, and outside as well). They didn't have any openings, but they have a system where they constantly accept applications and then call you if the job you are interested in opens up. Thursday afternoon while I was sleeping (I've been working graveyard) the director of surveillance at the Palms called me and asked me to come in for an interview.

That was this morning at 9 AM. The interview ended at 10-ish and he told me they were interviewing one more candidate, and that I'd hear form him on Monday at the latest. He called about two hours ago and offered me the job. I told him I'd have to talk it over with my husband and that I'd call him Monday morning by nine to let him know.

Soo.... here's the dilemma. I'm definitely ready to leave Stations. I've been there almost exactly a year and I'm itching for all the things I talked about before in regards to work challenges.

I don't necessarily have to forfeit my interview at the Wynn. It's scheduled for January 8th and I have every intention of going. I DO worry that when I show up and they say, "So, you're with Stations," and I say, "actually, I've moved to the Palms," that'll look bad. My friend Jordan, who has lived/worked here for five years, assured me that people do that in Vegas all the time. Even if they do and it's standard, I'm not sure that I'm OK with it.

I also have to think about what my chances at the Wynn really are. It seems like hedging my bets by taking the job at the Palms, so I'll have a kickass job regardless of whether I get hired at the Wynn or not, wouldn't be a bad idea. The Palms is a significant enough pay raise ($2.25/hour more than I'm currently making) to make the move profitable. Benefits are great, more vacation, etc.

I know I could have worse problems than picking which job I want. Something else to point out is that in my interview today, the director answered all my questions about his philosophies and policies with answers that I agree with and made his room sound like a place I'd want to work.

Should I just take the job and take the chance of telling them adios if I were to get hired at the Wynn?

Or should I just sit tight at Stations and hope that the Wynn will materialize, and make alternate plans if/after it doesn't?

If it were me, I'd take the offer from The Palms, hon. It will look better on your resume, and will show Wynn's (when you interview there) that you can make it in the "bigtime". ;)

I would imagine that the Vegas jobs have a high turnover anyway, so that's probably not a big worry to HR hiring personnel. It's something they expect to see, particularly when a move is made in an upward direction.

If you don't take the Palms job, because if the Wynn thing doesn't work out, you're still sitting at the Stations wishing you had taken the Palms job.

You could always go to your boss at the Stations, let him know about the Palms offer, and give them a chance to make a counter-offer before you make a decision and then wait on the Wynn thing.

Don't sit and wait, if you don't get the job at Wynn you will likely kick yourself. You very may well love this new job more, so it is a win win situation from the get go.

I think what is important to employers is not necessarily where you've been, but where you're going. I say take the job, and when you have your Wynn interview, make sure to explain very clearly that their new establishment is where you want to be. Perhaps throw in that you do not intend to attend any further interviews if you get the job there.

Either way, best of luck to you :) Changing jobs is always scary.

When does the new Wynn facility open? It's under construction right now correct?

It would be one thing if you applied and an interview was requested the next week for an immediate opening, and then you switched jobs. This is another situation entirely.

Switching employers during the time frame you have is highly probable and if Wynn is as good of an employer as you say, I'm sure they expect these things to happen.

I highly doubt changing jobs will be a negative during the interview. In fact it may be a positive in that you are desirable to more reputable employers.

Yes. They've finished the tower (it's fucking awesome and completely dominates the rest of the strip) and right now they're finishing up the shops and casino area, along with the front attractions (Steve Wynn claimed that the Wynn's water show will make the Bellagio fountains look like a garden sprinkler).

It's scheduled to open April 28 (I thought it was the 18th at first, oops), which is his wife's birthday. Aww.

Go with the sure thing and take the job at the Palms. While holding out is sometimes good I personally wouldn't risk it. But then again I'm weird like that.

If you follow my advice you're possibly akin to my line of thinking which is that of "What I want doesn't matter, what I can do for who I take care of does. I'm not saying make yourself miserable but sacrifice is a reward in and of itself."

My .63 cents (After taxes of course)

Ahh, Las Vegas... dust and sweat... a fortune to the lucky, a pit to the decrepit.

If you were thrown a Queen and a King, would you hit hoping for an Ace?

A bird in the hand is always worth two in the bush.
That and if you don't want to own up to the move during your interview, just evade answering the question. Best way to do that is to smile and expound on the question they asked you before asking you about current employment.
Besides, the Palms is really nice!
Good luck in whichever you choose.

Ok I am going to go against the grain with my advice. However first I would like to state that I don't know what you do for a living and that Vegas is obviously a world of its own.

In most companies I have worked for, or consulted for, accepting a position then turning around 2 mos later and leaving is a huge mistake. Only if was for extraordinary reasons would it even remotely be acceptable. It would work against my career development and word would spread that I am an opportunist with no company loyalty and a job hopper. Staffing positions costs money and the first year with most firms is when they invest money in you, training you.

The questions I would ask if I was the hiring manager at Wynns is why after only 2mos at the Palms are you looking for to make a move? Why did you leave the Stations two months ago? The risk you run even if you convince Wynns to hire you is that you will have a bad name at the Palms, which in a small town like Vegas will spread pretty quickly.

Now the exception is if this is how everyone in Vegas operates or at least at the type of position you are applying for. I know some call centres have ridiculous turn over rates and it isn't uncommon for people to move frequently.

If it were me I would accept the position at the Palms and then maybe in a year apply at the Wynn.

I would steer clear of playing one firm of the other in a bidding war.

Good Luck

The Palms casino is a Maloof. Those are the most badass guys on the strip.

I'd take the Palms job in a heartbeat. You have a job offer now, as opposed to hoping you MIGHT beat out the 6 billion other people that you said would be applying to the Wynn resort.

If you do get a better offer at the Wynn, no good boss would ever try to keep an employee from bettering themselves.

Definitely not. An excellent analogy that I can relate to 100%.

Yeah, I talked to Jake about it a lot tonight, and I've been talking to my supervisor about it at work tonight. He's like, "take it, take it!"

So I'm gonna!11!1!!!
