View Full Version : Never seen ya, still know your name

I seem to be coming across people who I have never interacted with but know the name of my character. Which normally doesn't bother me but the character I am currently focusing on has been on hiatus for 7 fucking years and due to shenanigans has amnesia. Doesn't even know their own name. So it's a bit jarring to come into a room and people just immediately blow my attempt to stay in character by saying his name.
Is it just me? Am I an elitist asshole? Does this bother anyone else?

Tales of your kobold slaying adventures are still being talked about, 7 years later.

Damn it. I was hoping to be known for my deep dickings.

I know that feeling, dude. I make it a point to ask how they know me. I really wish there was a way to turn off your name until you introduce yourself.

I have always justified it by assuming that one of the greet verbs. Bow, wave...etc covers the introductory BS.

I agree with you, but it's a losing battle. In general, I try to have a reason for each of my characters as to why they'd be known pre-introduction to be able to play it off. For amnesia, that doesn't quite work.
I played a low-level rogue for a while who'd introduce himself as a different name than I gave him in the generator. He'd twig out if you called him by his "real" name. "Where'd you hear that name? Who sent you?!" kind of shit. Good times!

It's just you. This is stupid to even try to rp because everyone has a name in gs.

The fact that GS broadcasts your name makes it really annoying.
That being said.... IRL.. if I saw someone I hadn't seen in 7 years and remembered their name, I would likely say it too.

I haven't run into someone that remembers me yet! Besides Jeril and Gwen, I think. But that's mainly OOC lnet bullshit. Haven't ran into them IC.

Jeril recognized you even though you're all grown up now?

Just roleplay that everyone in Elanthia has limited psychic abilities. Or that everyone wears a name tag.

Tell people your crystal amulet told you his name.

I like it! For the paranoid characters tell them there is a special amunet channel that everyone but that person is attuned to and they discuss everyone's name on that channel. And what they look like in their underwear.

Eh, it's a mechanic thing. You can try to fight it but it's an uphill battle and you'll have to do it for everyone who doesn't personally know you.
I mean, if you're going the amnesia angle then maybe the character does actually know you.

In a game where magic abounds I find it not unreasonable that people would have some means to know your name, I guess.

It never bothered me. I can handle that much suspension of disbelief. Why not just assume some random commoner/farmer came up and called you by name but had no other info, so you know the name but nothing else of your history? Being told your name or knowing it to say to people doesn't preclude you from having amnesia.

Fair enough, sir.
