So with GOT set to restart next month on HBO, is there anyone else who really likes both the book and the show that's torn between what to do? Before I always made sure to read the books first before I watched the show and in this case doing that didn't have much of an impact on how much I still liked the show. Going forward though, if I watch the show first, I have a bad feeling I won't then want to read the book or it just won't be as enjoyable.

You assume he is going to come out with the book. Its RSN.

I view the book and show as separate canons so I can enjoy them both without getting fanboyed up. Besides, you've got at least a year for the next book.

If you read the books and then watch the show, the disparities between the story-lines will be a major distraction. On the flip-side, watching the show and then reading the books will offer a really immersive dip into the world that's portrayed in the series.

Well for the most part, the story lines that have been included (which of course there were other story lines that didn't make the show) up until the third quarter of the last season were pretty much in line with the books I thought, so it wasn't too big of a deal. But going forward, I think you're right because there was a marked diversion from the book in the last quarter of the season that will have to now continue with the new season. Plus, I rather like the actors they've continually chosen for parts, so that has helped to give a bit of personality and depth when I'm reading the books.

They really went off the rail with Sansa and thankfully fleshed out Brienne's character a lot more than George RR Martin did.

The plots from the book to the show have diverged enough that I don't know if it matters. It creates different immersion. I think I watched half of season 1 then I read the first 4 books because of how good the show was. I want to say I bought book 1 when I saw the teaser trailer of the rider in the snow. Book 1 and 2 were outstanding, 4 was decent, and 3 was a slog to read.

3 was brilliant and 4 was the slog. 3 had the red wedding, amongst other jaw dropping moments. 5 is ok until about half way through and then gets brilliant along the veins of book 3. Every chapter has major shit going down at some point.
I recommend watching the show and then reading the books. It's nice being able to put faces to the characters in the books. But like others have said, they can be very different from one another. The books have more characters, more interactions, more plot, more everything. Not to mention LSH.

You're right. I meant 4. 5 was decent if now slow at times, mainly in the beginning, yep. All of that side bar south stuff too that hasn't made the show AT ALL. 2 is my favorite by far.
