How To Get Private Messages In A Different Window than Thoughts

I'm pretty sure I've heard people say they get private messages in a separate message from regular thoughts/chat msgs.

I don't see a setting for that anywhere that I've looked. I have searched the repo for the relevant tags I can think of, but nothing shows up.

So, how in the world do I accomplish this?
