View Full Version : Response to "The Boot's Return: Poll" in the official RR town forum.

There was a reason the log was destroyed and the cutter put in place. Though on the surface it seems troublesome, it is the reason RR still has decent loot in their hunting areas. It is why you can go into the commons and have a community chest filled with stuff. This was done to keep out the riff raff.
Though the idea of the log being out in Marsh Keep is entertaining as fuck and perhaps the community has changed enough that the above would not happen. Is it something you guys are willing to take a chance on? Because if they do fix the boot (I doubt if they will), it will remain that way.....forever!

What's in this chest that people would be worried about? A bunch of noob gear?
I thought the whole reason for change was "realism" just like every other dumb change they made back then.
Because when I think of a medieval fantasy setting where people shoot lightning from their hands and can run around with no legs to a healer that magically gives them new legs by meditating, realism is the first thing that comes to mind.

Before the cutter, they had a big problem with people coming to town taking everything from the bench (it used to be just a bench instead of a community chest\treat bag\herb crate, which is now the bench that can be sat on.) then turning around and pawning the stuff. It was one of the reasons they decided on killing the boot. Probably one of the lesser reasons though.
They still have a problem from time to time and when it happens it is always an issue.
Funny thing is, the person that posted the poll is one of the first people to bitch in the forums when the chest get's cleaned out. SMH

Make it to where only RR citizens can take stuff from it. Problem solved.

Didn't those RR peoples listen to the warrior raging thrak when it comes to leaving important shit on the ground? If you don't want someone to come in and take everything, don't leave it in a communal place.

That would probably fix that issue.
Their biggest concern when they removed the log was people being disruptive. RR was always centered around role play and they had to do something about the hecklers. For the most part, it worked. Truly, bitching about a 15-20 minute wait on the cutter when it used to be 2-3 hours with the risk of being thrown off before reaching RR is kind of over the top. Fuck, you can't even get a full roach race in.

Travel to RR should have been made easier long ago. The place is a ghost town.

I'm sure they did and pretty sure they also listened to Raging Thrak when he talks about not assuming that anything on the ground is free for the taking. Or did you forget that part?

I agree that it is. But has treasure hunting not always been this way? Finding the places that most never travel? It's a trade off and you know as well as I do, they bring the boot back and those hunting areas will be drained within a month.
I don't really care, I'm just pointing some things out that should be thought about before acting.

Just wracking my memory here, but the decision to remove the boot came from GM Bradach circa 2003? This was the time the town was redesigned with a museum, and the cutter was a project he had been working on and may have been inspired by BHA's longboat. At the time, he felt that the town should be more insular as it was a key RP region. It had nothing to do with the bench as I am pretty sure it didn't exist then, nor did a town garbage can. I almost vaguely remember that it was not originally a node, which I think was added after the cutter.
Picking was done in the tree - thus the pickle barrel for trash. This kept TSC safer from scarabs and incinerators and kept TSC free of litter. Spell ups were done in the sanctuary. TSC was reserved for RP, and spell casting and picking there were huge taboos.

You have a shitty argument.
You're talking about people being disruptive 15 years ago when we had a constant population of 1k+ on at all times.
I feel like heading over to RR just to be 'disruptive' to their RP behavior, because that sense of entitlement to have their own little town that nobody is allowed to enters pisses me off.

2003 sounds right, the bench was there (I know this because I took a bunch of shit from it when I first started playing) and it was a part of the deciding factors, though as I have stated one of the lesser factors. The rest of what you have there seems pretty spot on.

But you are allowed to enter, anyone is welcome. You just can't be a fucking troll. Why is this so hard to understand?

Exactly. As population shrinks, the last thing we need to do is encourage inbred, exclusionary little RP kingdoms.
We need to gentrify River's Rest.

It was relatively unfortunate that the long term effect was not considered at the time. BHA had subsequently had difficulty with membership until the annexes became a thing.
Which, essentially - after the removal of the need of workshops was just another shaft to the CHE houses.

RP environment? LMAO More like afk scripting environment. (Based on my observations of a char I have had there for about half a year.)

I had several characters come up in RR and very much enjoyed the community. Isolation plays a small part in that, but I think the Cutter went too far. As long as it is not instantaneous travel, there should be enough of a sense of distance that the community could still be distinct from the rest of the game. River's Rest should not be travelled to/from like a hunting ground, but it also shouldn't take more than 20ish minutes from when you decide to go and you're there.

I had a small stint in RR relatively recently and it was empty except for like, 1 other person. Of course at the time I was only playing during the workday. Previous to that I was in RR a lot but even that was like, 4-5 years ago at this point. At the time it was half very helpful, welcoming, active core group with more than average RP interaction, and half afk scriping. The half being 1 full MA crew that would show up at the citadel and get me killed when all the sudden 97 things spawned on me. Wamp wamp.

Oh, don't mistake it for a flip flop. My opinion is that it's a bad idea for River's Rest. But the sadistic side of me wants to see them put it in, so after the full effect has set in, I can sit back, point and laugh at what will be the landings aborted child.

I would like the boot back. It would encourage people to go there more often. I know if i had an easy way back id be resting in RR more often, but i dont feel like spending the silvers for 740. In fact if the boot was back id hazard a guess that id probably stay in RR most of the time.
I think with the changes to travel and all of that it doesnt make sense to have the place so isolated.
Also, since we are going this route ill decide to be the first one to beat a dead horse and say, we need capped hunting there. The confluence doesnt count.

I have always been a fan of the idea of opening up a fast travel between Terras and RR....an easy solution to capped hunting ground, they both are insular communities that can be insular together, and it would probably increase the chance of finding a service if you need it.
Maybe put the boot in terras, with an appropriate level cap on the RR side, you would of course have to level out the cost of travel between the cutter and the Star but that shouldn't be a problem since they are lowering it anyway.

Sounds like a fare trade off to me.
I must say, I really like the idea of the clipper. It's like the mining carts, only you can do other things. That said, having the boot back would also be really nice for those times you just want to be there. But if you aren't in a hurry, there are interesting group potentials on the boat trip.
I like that Teras idea. Having a Teras-Zul Logoth-River's Rest triad of connections would be really interesting.

The boat system is just terrible. To get to Teras and River's Rest. I wish it was more like the mining carts. Where you wait at most like 30s and then start the travelling and its done in a couple minutes. Not this crap of buying the ticket and then either waiting or logging out in the waiting room for 12-24 hrs.

I think the Zul Logoth part isn't doable. It would basically connect Teras and RR to EN and the landing.

I hear you there, thus also wanting an instant option. But if you are not in a hurry and with some people, boats have a lot of potential. I like choices.

As long as there is an option for very short term/instant travel, then by all means take that half hour boat ride. I doubt many people actually take the boat ride and just log off in the waiting area.
