View Full Version : Is TV too lewd?

So sitting at work today I was listening to ESPN radio like I normally due. And for 3 hours it seemed like all anyone would call in about was to complain about the NFL and the lead in on MNF. I only caught the tail end of it but from everything I've seen, read, or heard .. I really don't think it was a huge deal. But apparently theres been enough of an outcry from viewers that both the NFL and ABC have issued statements about it.

I'm sort of curious where people think the line should be drawn on TV commercials and programming. And if anyone saw the spot itself what their opinions on this instance are.

Heres a link to a an article about ABC's statement.

Didn't see it. However, I'd say TV in general isn't "too lewd". It's more about the unrealistic atmosphere shows encourage.

I think people need to fucking relax already. I have 2 kids and I don't think I would have a big problem with them seeing that.

Nude women shooting each other with machine guns. That would be the perfect show. Then at the end, it ends with an orgy.

This is stupid. People need to chill out with all this censorship crap.

But I will say I personally think it's STUPID that we have a show called "DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES"

Come on.

Edited because I missed an apostrophe.

That puts a retarded gender statement on the show.

Just name is "Crazy Suburbs" or something like that.

I can just see the World Series commercials next year .... "Be sure to tune into the Fox Series Premere of 'Slutty Step-Sisters' after game three of the World Series on Fox!"

Thanks. That was basically my point.

Dumb name.

Here's a vague statement:

I hear in Europe after a certain hour there's basically porn on all the channels.

I've never been to Europe, so if I'm wrong about this, then um, I'm wrong.

Kaeral

Yeah, you're wrong.. there's porn on almost all the secondary nameless channels. Never on any of the major ones.

11-16-2004, 07:35 PM
Oh. Okay. Sorry.

I guess part of my confusion on what the big deal comes from alot of the parents calling in on this specific issue seemed to have a point and then just lost it. They'd call in and say if they are planning on watching Tv with their young children they shouldn't be ambushed with this stuff but then the more I thought about it the more I became uncaring. If your planning on sitting around watching football with your children which is a violent sporting event to begin with I'm not sure I really care if you ambushed by suggestive advertising.

Let's not forget all of the commercials targeted toward the prime demographic of the sport.

I'm sorry ... but if you can't hack a woman in a towel, why do you tolerate beer commercials?

morals, and all that is included, will always be an point of argument. I think people just need to not flip out when it's now how they think it should be....

and i don't see how football is that violent of a sport to use as an illustration like it was. there's a difference between someone being shot, stabbed, etc. and someone being tackled.

Tsa`ah

There is a marked difference between types of violence. Certainly someone getting shot or stabbed is violent, but that does not negate that football, to a lesser degree, is also violent.

It's an impact sport and you have to have a certain degree of aggression and a somewhat violent streak to excel in certain positions.

Um, that wasn't rude at all, now I reiterate my statement...

...Is there something, in say, France, perchance, where around 10pm, *some* broadcasting stations will change to a more pornographic content?

CrystalTears

I believe they do, Stanley. I've seen where they even sell the porn magazines out on the sidewalk as though they were as commonly seen as comic books.

I feel that Americans are just getting more intolerant than less. I don't understand any type of censorship they enforce on TV. It apparently is okay to show graphic violence and sexual suggestion, but saying "fuck" is wrong. Hell taking out the word "bitch" from movies in the 60's and 70's where you'd think that tolerance should be less than now. I don't understand it.

I never said that football is not violent, i know that it is to a degree. It was the way it was used and portrayed in a previous post as being violent enough to compare to other shows that i did not agree with.

I didn't compare it to other shows. I used the inherent violence of the sport and put it up against suggestive advertising. If your prepared to let your kids watch people tackle each other, hurt each other (injuries did occur on MNF), and such then I don't have much sympathy for them complaining that their children were exposed to sexual inneundo.

Eylanthriel

I think that's just it. They were expecting to see a football game with violence (as mild as it is) not sexual inneundos.

I think most people have different oppinions of whether or not either are appropriate. The viewers that became upset, for instance, thought it (the commercial) wasn't appropriate.

Now, I am not saying it was not appropriate, honestly I do not care, that is just my take on it.

I thought the way most people reacted with the Janet Jackson episode is sort of the same thing we're seeing with this commercial. Morals my ass... people need to quit pretending they have the highest morals when it comes to television and the media in general and relax. We are adults and don't need to be spoon-fed.

I say, more nudity and violence! Let the parents worry about what their kids see on TV and leave the adults to their own hedonistic pleasures.

Common sense however goes far.

If you have an issue with a kid being exposed to sexuality in any form, football is probably one of the last things they should watch simply due to the commercials.

I'm torn..... I wouldn't want my husband watching football with my daughter and suddenly naked people are there. I see the difference as, we can explain football, and make the choice to watch it.

But if they hit us with commericals like that, we have no warning and are left to explain why a women is trying to seduce a football player.

Yet at the same time, what else should we expect? It is MNF. :D

I think these people should watch Drawn Together and then put it all into perspective. If you thought South Park was bad, this makes them look like The Wiggles. :D

I think ABC is laughing their asses off. Here it is Thursday and people are still talking about their show.

Sure they didn't know that the skit would generate so much press.

I'm not willing to sacrifice my enjoyment of SEX and VIOLENCE!!1 on tv because some parent has a problem with something that couldn't even be considered soft porn.

Gangbang action... Eh, I'm just fine with having to pay to see that on cable. I would definitely not want it being shown on your local station. Speaking of which, there's nothing to stop a kid from picking up the remote and switching their channel to on demand and ordering a porno if they really wanted to. I reiterate, the responsibility is left to the parents.
