Some of the greatest music of my youth, always changing with the times he was a brilliant artist, will miss hearing new tunes from him, at least he left us a parting gift with a new release friday I suppose.

What a bummer. The world lost a great one. He just released a new album 3 days ago...

69 is so young. Can't say I'm shocked he kept his cancer diagnosis to himself.

I don't normally respond to anon rep rep, and never really the shart/fart rep because the people that do it are basically single digit IQ people. But this one made me want to comment.

Thread: RIP Goblin King

Whoever posted that, please do me a favor, find a nice long sturdy knitting needle, jam it into your ear canal and twist it around.

Hundreds of billions of lives have come and gone over the full course of human history...very few of them actually make history. Whether you liked his music or not, you can't argue his contribution to the arts, to society as a whole, and to humanity as a whole.

It is a select few of us who take the opportunity to change the world when that opportunity presents itself.

I always felt Bowie was criminally underrated. To me he's right there with and possibly beyond The Beatles. Bowie was 1 person who did it longer and created much more music.

Not every album was great or good the whole way through, but the stuff that was good is magical.

The amount of work he produced and the level of quality is amazing. 1971-1980 there wasn't anyone in his universe. He was it.

Nice. I always hoped he'd do an interview with stern. I don't think Howard would've done the usual schtick, asking about money, sex life, dick size etc with Bowie. I think he would've been in awe. Oh well.

He was too obscure and unknown to do Stern. Not to mention gay with all the cross dressing and make up. If it weren't for Labyrinth, he'd be completely unknown.

Iggy pop and Lou reed might not have had solo careers if not for Bowie. Mott the hoople might not have had a career at all if not for Bowie.

Iggy pops lust for life is basically a Bowie album sung by iggy pop. Great album. Hell, China girl was originally given to iggy pop by Bowie for his first solo album. Then Bowie did it better on let's dance.

Bowie was the sequel to the Beatles. 1 man with a deeper catalog who constantly reinvented himself. Even his last album has some amazing songs. He did it until the very end.

The Beatles members haven't created a decent song in a long time. People aren't clammoring for McCartney or Starr's latest work. When I heared Bowie had a new album hitting on Jan 8th a few weeks ago I went straight to iTunes to see if anything from it was available. I've been listening to Lazarus for weeks.

I've felt Bowie hasn't been given the recognition he deserves for years. People loooooove the Beatles and I get it. Rubber soul/revolver and on was great. Everything prior was kiddie shit.

I think what Bowie was capable of producing from 1971-1983 all on his own, rivals what the Beatles did from 65-70. I think it surpasses it. He was one man with a vision that constantly changed, who brought it various artists to contribute to his work, his ideas. It wasn't all great. Not every song is a classic. I would be stunned if anyone could present a body of work/catalog with the quality of Bowies.

Not to mention the movie roles. The title of this thread is RIP the goblin king. Bowie was a tour de force unlike anything ever seen.

I once worked in the archives of a university library and read letters from college seniors requesting that they could drink wine with their (university supervised) supper in the early 60s. Compare that to society by the end of the 60s. The Beatles were to some degree a product of those societal changes, but I think it's fair to say they were also to some degree a cause of them. It looks like kid stuff now but at the time it was open revolution, and decried as such by the squares. Everyone ought to listen to Bowie songs, everyone has listened to Beatles songs.
